I'm something of a geologist, and I have three reference books that describe different origins for luminite. A fanciful book states that they come from the sky, from shooting stars. Another reference with a theological bent claims that Elidinis brought the rocks to Ashenfall (how she drilled them into the ground is not covered in the book). Another tome, which I am more inclined to believe, says that luminite was once coal that got twisted with anima. If you're a student geologist and fancy a good topic for a thesis, I'd recommend investigating which one is correct.
