How to beat Chang Hong, the Thunder Spear

Our strategy, built from the fight's numbers, followed by the game's own codex entry.

  • Parry the blue flashes: 2 of Chang Hong, the Thunder Spear's 20 attacks flash blue before they land, and a timed parry stops them.
  • Dodge the red flashes: 3 attacks flash red. They can't be parried, so dodge through them instead of blocking.
  • The tightest tell is Empowered Aerial Slam: only 0.36s from the flash to the hit, so react to the flash, not the swing.
  • Spear Grab Throw is a grab: dodge it, because blocking and parrying don't stop a grab.
  • Chang Hong, the Thunder Spear adds new attacks below 80%, 70%, 50% HP, so expect the moveset to change at 80%.
  • Bring Frost: it deals 16% more damage to Chang Hong, the Thunder Spear.
  • Shock builds up 16% faster on Chang Hong, the Thunder Spear.
  • Chang Hong, the Thunder Spear's Sha-Chi bar is 2,400: perfect parries and Guard Break attacks drain it, and an empty bar opens the boss to a finisher.

Frost and Lightning are your best tools against Chang Hong: both deal 16% more damage, Shock builds up 16% faster and Frost lasts 16% longer. Skip Bleed and Blood Burst builds, which accrue 60% slower, and expect Fire, Water, Burn and Soaked to be 30% weaker.

At level 15 his 9,000 base HP and 2,400 base Sha-Chi calculate to roughly 88,830 HP and 11,122 Sha-Chi before difficulty. Parrying his attacks drains 40% less Sha-Chi than normal, so lean on Standard Combos and elemental damage to reach a Guard Break rather than relying on Parry pressure alone.

The codex calls him a master of the spear who trained until he could gather lightning and call down thunder. He follows Acolyte Lei Ting in Pangzhen, drops the Thunder Spear Phantom Edge, and the next boss in order is his second form, Chang Hong, the Thunder Lancer (boss #41).

Chang Hong, the Thunder Spear lore

The codex entry the game unlocks for Chang Hong, the Thunder Spear.

Thunder splits the sky as man and horse descend from above. Chang Hong is a master of the spear, highly accomplished within the Order, calm and steady in manner, and guided by a strong sense of justice. He is also an old friend who once fought side by side with Soul.

As a youth, Chang Hong learned the spear from an elderly escort and mastered his techniques within a month. He continued training tirelessly, practicing his spear against the ripples of water, until his skill advanced to the point where he could gather lightning and call down thunder.

After witnessing brutal conflicts beyond the Wulin, Chang Hong came to value peace and stability within both the Wulin and the Order. He keeps a low profile and rarely uses his true name. Even when he married and had a child, he invited only a handful of close friends to celebrate. In quieter moments, he can often be found sitting in a corner of the Pavilion of Knowledge, drinking alone.

Now that he and Soul meet again, has he come to settle a personal matter, or to carry out the Order's command?
