How to beat Chang Hong, the Thunder Lancer
Our strategy, built from the fight's numbers, followed by the game's own codex entry.
- Parry the blue flashes: 3 of Chang Hong, the Thunder Lancer's 22 attacks flash blue before they land, and a timed parry stops them.
- Dodge the red flashes: 4 attacks flash red. They can't be parried, so dodge through them instead of blocking.
- The tightest tell is Galloping Lance Charge: only 0.39s from the flash to the hit, so react to the flash, not the swing.
- Chang Hong, the Thunder Lancer adds new attacks below 70% HP, so expect the moveset to change at 70%.
- Bring Frost: it deals 16% more damage to Chang Hong, the Thunder Lancer.
- Shock builds up 16% faster on Chang Hong, the Thunder Lancer.
- Chang Hong, the Thunder Lancer's Sha-Chi bar is 3,000: perfect parries and Guard Break attacks drain it, and an empty bar opens the boss to a finisher.
Chang Hong's mounted form keeps the same weak points: Frost and Lightning deal 16% more damage, with Shock building 16% faster and Frost lasting 16% longer. Fire, Water and now Poison are all reduced by 30%, and Bleed and Blood Burst build up 60% slower, so a Frost or Lightning weapon is the clear pick.
He is tougher than the first form, with 10,000 base HP and 3,000 base Sha-Chi, roughly 98,700 HP and 13,902 Sha-Chi at level 15 before difficulty. Parries drain 30% less of his Sha-Chi than usual.
The codex describes rider and mount moving as one, his spear driving lightning into the earth so bolts coil across the ground and leave little room to evade. He follows Chang Hong, the Thunder Spear (boss #40) and leads into Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster. Victory is worth 51,000 Remnant Dust and the Thunder Spear Phantom Edge.

Chang Hong calls forth his beloved horse. With a flick of his spear, wind and clouds stir, and lightning answers. Rider and mount move as one. Hooves thunder forward as his spear cleaves downward, driving lightning into the earth. Bolts coil across the ground like silver serpents, leaving the enemy little room to evade.

There is nothing more to say. Chang Hong bids his old friend farewell, slings his spear across his back, and mounts his horse. With a neigh and the rumble of thunder, he rides away, the heaviness in his heart gone.
