How to beat Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster

Our strategy, built from the fight's numbers, followed by the game's own codex entry.

  • Parry the blue flashes: 6 of Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster's 13 attacks flash blue before they land, and a timed parry stops them.
  • Dodge the red flashes: 1 attacks flash red. They can't be parried, so dodge through them instead of blocking.
  • The tightest tell is Retreating Fireball: only 0.41s from the flash to the hit, so react to the flash, not the swing.
  • Bring Lightning: it deals 30% more damage to Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster.
  • Shock builds up 30% faster on Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster.
  • Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster's Sha-Chi bar is 3,000: perfect parries and Guard Break attacks drain it, and an empty bar opens the boss to a finisher.

Lightning is the only weakness Flame has. It deals 30% more damage and Shock builds up 30% faster, while Fire, Poison and Water are cut by 60% and Frost by 30%. Burn, Poison, Bleed, Blood Burst and Soaked all build up 60% slower, so commit fully to a Lightning setup.

Expect a long Guard Break. His Sha-Chi loses 50% less from your hits and 30% less from Parries, on top of 3,000 base Sha-Chi, about 13,902 at level 15. HP sits at roughly 88,830 from a 9,000 base, before difficulty, and his base attack of 130 is above the 100 of his Pangzhen neighbours, so play patiently.

The codex describes Flame and Senior Mo dancing as one steel lion on burning Plum Blossom Stakes, with saw blades whirling at the lion head's sides and fire spewing from its mouth. Next in order is The Lion Dance Grandmaster's Final Dance (boss #43), and Flame drops the Dormant Flaming Mane.

Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster lore

The codex entry the game unlocks for Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster.

Deep in the Sha-Chi-choked ruins of the lion dance hall, fire lights the night. Grandmaster Flame holds the steel lion head high, with Second-in-Command Senior Mo as the tail behind him. The two step onto the burning Plum Blossom Stakes, leaping and turning in perfect sync, their every movement capturing the majesty of the mighty lion.

Yet both dancers are controlled by masks sewn onto their faces. Every leap and lunge carries murderous intent. Saw blades whirl on either side of the lion head like a beast’s fangs, devouring whatever stands before them. The fire spewing from the lion’s mouth can no longer drive away evil. Instead, it burns everything around it, fueled by Sha-Chi.

The disaster began with the New Year’s Eve bells that stirred the Sha-Chi. The uncontrolled flames unleashed a slaughter, burning the people of the estate and the Lion Dance Disciples alike. Flame himself was gravely wounded and left dying in the inferno, where Leng Tu subjected him to Perfect Transcension and used the mask to control his mind.

A lion dancer whose calling was to subdue evil would not become an evil thing himself. With the last of his will, he sealed his own meridians and suppressed his murderous nature. He waits for a new one to pluck the green to come through the flames, end this calamity, and burn away the evils of the world in his stead.
