How to beat Peng Meng, the Axemaster

Our strategy, built from the fight's numbers, followed by the game's own codex entry.

  • Parry the blue flashes: 6 of Peng Meng, the Axemaster's 24 attacks flash blue before they land, and a timed parry stops them.
  • Dodge the red flashes: 2 attacks flash red. They can't be parried, so dodge through them instead of blocking.
  • The tightest tell is Turning Axe Whirlwind: only 0.31s from the flash to the hit, so react to the flash, not the swing.
  • Grab and Throw is a grab: dodge it, because blocking and parrying don't stop a grab.
  • Peng Meng, the Axemaster adds new attacks below 90%, 10% HP, so expect the moveset to change at 90%.
  • Bring Poison: it deals 30% more damage to Peng Meng, the Axemaster.
  • Bleed builds up 30% faster on Peng Meng, the Axemaster.
  • Peng Meng, the Axemaster's Sha-Chi bar is 4,000: perfect parries and Guard Break attacks drain it, and an empty bar opens the boss to a finisher.

Poison and Bleed are the tools for Peng Meng. Poison deals 30% more damage and builds up 30% faster, and Bleed also accumulates 30% faster. Fire, Frost and Lightning are all resisted by 30%, and Water by 60%, so leave those elements at home.

His Sha-Chi is the real wall: 4,000 base, about 6,300 at level 3, and he loses 50% less Sha-Chi when hit and 20% less when you Parry. Guard Break will take far longer than usual, so let status damage chip at his roughly 18,700 calculated HP instead of waiting for a break.

The codex describes a great axe that can split stone and sunder mountains, so avoid trading blows. Victory in Weeping Creek Valley grants 9,000 Remnant Dust, the Dread Axe Phantom Edge, and a readable note, The Axemaster's Final Request.

Peng Meng, the Axemaster lore

The codex entry the game unlocks for Peng Meng, the Axemaster.

Eldest of the Four Axes, Peng Meng underwent Transcension to avenge the other three. His body grew massive, his flesh hardened, and his strength became immense. His great axe could split stone and sunder mountains. Several Mandate elites fell beneath it.

In the valley, a Mandate squad subdued him only at terrible cost. Thick chains were driven through his shoulder blades, binding him behind the Outpost.

Once, the four brothers drank deep and feasted heartily. They performed deeds of chivalry, yet their axes also claimed countless innocent lives amid the Wulin's bloodshed. In those days, every debt was still settled by the Wulin's rules.

Then three brothers were murdered through treachery, and Mandate squads hunted the last. Cornered and desperate, Peng Meng surrendered his final shred of reason and sank utterly into Transcension.
