Phantom Blade Zero True Ending: How to Get the Final Battle Ending (and Every Missable)

How Phantom Blade Zero decides its endings, straight from the game files: the two Tales that unlock the Final Battle ending, the point of no return, ending outfits and what is missable.

Phantom Blade Zero has four endings in its files: Lóng's Roar, Annihilation, Final Battle and Undying Grudge. The game never calls one of them the "true ending", but one of them needs every condition the game checks and gives the most rewards: Final Battle. We traced the ending logic through the game's quest-flow graphs and scripts, so everything below is what the game actually checks, not a guess.

All Phantom Blade Zero endings and how to get them

When you reach the final area of Mount Soulrend, the game reads two flags and locks in one of three ending routes. The fourth ending only exists in 66 Days mode.

EndingWhat the game checksOutfits unlocked
AnnihilationSecrets at the Heart of the Lake not completed. The route ends after the fight with Meng Hua.The Hunt, Kindred
Lóng's RoarSecrets at the Heart of the Lake completed, Bloodline Awakening not completed. The route ends after the fight with Zuo Shang. The Hunt, Kindred, Blizzard
Final BattleBoth Secrets at the Heart of the Lake and Bloodline Awakening completed. Zuo Shang's fight continues into a second form; completing it awards With Heart and Blood. The Hunt, Kindred, Blizzard, Legacy
Undying Grudge66 Days mode only: the run fails (the game's failure text reads "Failed to uncover the truth and find the 'Heart' before the end of your sixty-six-day lifespan").—
Outfit rewards are from the ending settlement script; the wardrobe shows "Unlock by reaching any ending" (The Hunt, Kindred) or "Unlock by reaching a specific ending" (Blizzard, Legacy).

Condition 1: Secrets at the Heart of the Lake

This Tale is the one the ending logic checks first. Without it you get Annihilation no matter what else you have done. Its quest log has 8 steps:

  1. Find Firefly's Memory Flowers
  2. Search for the ritual site at the Heart of the Lake!
  3. Find a way to enter the Heart of the Lake
  4. Enter Dusk's Refuge
  5. Search the Crimson Manor for the Crystal Eyeball [Yang]
  6. Collect the four Acolytes' masks and enter the Forbidden Ruins
  7. Socket the crystal eyeball into Puppet No. 99
  8. Explore the canyon to find Dusk

When its final fight is won, the Tale completes and Soul is taken to the Realm of Mirage, where Inanis hands over the Violet Blossom. That conversation is the moment the game records the ending condition. The Tale also awards Puppeteer's Bell and the achievement Forbidden Arts Beneath the Lake (15.3% of Steam players).

Condition 2: Bloodline Awakening (the five Lóng Pillars)

The second check is Bloodline Awakening. It runs alongside the Tale Lóng Pillar ("Find and touch the Lóng Pillars hidden throughout the land"), and its own quest log reads:

  • Return to the Lóng Pillar after new discoveries
  • Return to the Lóng Pillar to investigate
  • Find all five Lóng Pillars and complete their trials

Each Lóng Pillar runs its own trial fight. Finishing the fifth trial grants the Bastion of Mó Mask and sets the ending flag. The mask is also the Soul Tempering item that turns Sanguine into Infernal Rouge, and the Tale unlocks Phantom and Blade (13.1% on Steam).

The point of no return on Mount Soulrend

Before the last stretch on Mount Soulrend, Inanis stops you and the game reads both flags. Her line tells you where you stand:

Your progressWhat Inanis says
Secrets at the Heart of the Lake not done"You still have something very important to finish... To proceed rashly... may only invite disaster. Do you truly wish to continue?"
Only Secrets at the Heart of the Lake done"I know you can stop Her... and save the Wulin. But, what about your own matters… are they all settled? I don't want you carrying regrets!"
Both done"I know you're completely ready now! There is nothing more I can guide you with... Follow your own heart!"

You then choose "There's still unfinished business. Return later." or "No turning back now. Forward it is!". Choosing to go forward saves an ending return point, plays the chapter card A Soul's Worth and switches on a fast-travel restriction. If Inanis did not give you the "completely ready" line, pick "Return later" and finish the missing Tale first.

Missable rewards: gear only Tales give

For these rewards the files list no chest, pickup, shop or enemy drop: the Tale (and its scripted grant in the same region) is the only source. If you want them before a New Cycle, finish the Tale in the same playthrough. See all Tales and the missables checklist.

Difficulty and New Cycle locks

  • Wayfarer is locked for the whole playthrough once chosen. The game warns that achievements for finishing on Pathbreaker or Hellwalker cannot be unlocked and that 66 Days stays locked on that save.
  • Hellwalker "becomes available in New Game+ after completing the game once on Wayfarer or Pathbreaker difficulty, excluding the Instant Death ending" (the game's own wording; no ending in the files is named Instant Death).
  • 66 Days is unlocked after finishing on any other difficulty, uses Hellwalker difficulty with deaths limited to 66, and cannot be switched to after a game has started.
  • A Crane Bell memory costs a day: the tutorial says Soul "will rest there for the night, reducing your Remaining Days by one" and "days lost to Crane Bells and story progression cannot be recovered."
  • When a New Cycle starts, the game's prompt says equipment, progression items, Ability Training and Archives carry over, while quests, maps, Key Items and remaining days reset. Weapon names gain a +N suffix per Cycle.

What the files do not show

No other quest, NPC choice or collectible feeds the ending decision: the branch reads only the two flags above. The Hellwalker unlock text mentions an "Instant Death ending", but no ending in the files carries that name. Guide FAQ

What is the true ending in Phantom Blade Zero?

The game does not label one ending "true". Final Battle is the ending that requires every condition the game checks (Secrets at the Heart of the Lake and Bloodline Awakening), awards the Gold achievement With Heart and Blood and unlocks the Legacy outfit.

How many endings does Phantom Blade Zero have?

Four: Lóng's Roar, Annihilation and Final Battle on any difficulty, plus Undying Grudge, the failure ending of 66 Days mode.

How do you get the Final Battle ending?

Complete Secrets at the Heart of the Lake and Bloodline Awakening (touch all five Lóng Pillars and clear their trials) before choosing "No turning back now" on Mount Soulrend.

Is the Phantom Blade Zero ending missable?

Not on a normal run. After Annihilation or Lóng's Roar, Inanis offers Return to The Last Chance, which reloads the point before the final climb so you can finish the missing Tale. Only 66 Days removes that option after Lóng's Roar.

How do you unlock the Legacy outfit?

Reach the Final Battle ending. The ending settlement grants Legacy only for that ending; Blizzard comes with Lóng's Roar or Final Battle, and The Hunt and Kindred with any of the three main endings.

What does Inanis say if I am ready for the final battle?

"I know you're completely ready now! There is nothing more I can guide you with... Follow your own heart!" Any other line means a condition is still missing.
