Journal Entry: Ulv's Longbow
Ulv was always the silent hunter, in more ways than one. While it was true that no word ever left his lips, his footsteps, breath and, most importantly, his arrows, were all equally devoid of sound. The Wild Knights would jokingly call him the Silent Killer – though over time the crueler members of the order called him the Silent But Deadly, knowing he lacked the capability to argue back. The boy took these insults with quiet grace, never biting back, never reacting. He was used to those little cruelties, having faced them all his life.
He had carved the bow himself and once walked Ravanna through the process. The two of them were as true a friendship as could ever be hoped for. No lingering romantic tensions. No transaction or debt. No honour chained them together. They were friends simply because they were. Because two lonely people found each other and found a comfort in each others eccentricities. The wolf and the bat, platonic soulmates to the end.
For one of his birthdays, Ravanna enchanted the bow with a simple spell. She took animal bones, skulls and hides and wove necromantic magic through them, wrapping them around the limbs and grip of the bow, imbuing them with just enough of the underworld to strip them of their sound and a little of their substance. Like ghosts, the arrows would sail silently through the air, dropping targets before they ever knew what hit them.
It would have been the perfect birthday gift. If only Ulv had lived long enough to receive it.
The garou can be brutal in their assaults, considering notions like mercy to be the domain of the weak-willed, or the cowardly. Ulv was simply in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and was ambushed by a patrol of young garou, looking for the bloodmark that would grant them adulthood. There were six of them in total, but Ulv reduced them down to four, before the claws entered his throat and silenced him forever.
When Ravanna found his body, she went mad. An anger unlike any other, a rage more powerful than any storm, waged a war inside her between the light and the dark. The darkness won. Using the souls of slain garou, Ravanna's necromantic curse tore through the Highlands, twisting the clouds into screaming things, filled with a fraction of the rage she felt. As the ghosts of the dead garou crashed about within them, the clouds unleashed lightning and thunder upon the populace below, destroying countless settlements in an instant and countless more over the centuries that followed.
