Magik Playstyle and Archetype
Teleport Mix-Up / Portal Setplay
Magik puts portals on the screen and then attacks through them. Her fireball comes out somewhere unexpected, she arrives somewhere unexpected, and the opponent has to guess a side rather than a height.
Almost every mix-up in MARVEL Tōkon is a high/low — an overhead against a low. Magik's is a left/right, which is a fundamentally harder question, because guard direction changes depending on which side of you she is standing on. Teleport near a Dark Portal warps her next to the opponent with the exit determined by the direction you hold, and Teleport Slash attacks out of it. Two portals on screen means two possible arrival points.
What lifts her from gimmick to genuine top-tier is that the portals also change her projectiles. Demon Fire passing through a Dark Portal reappears next to the opponent. Demon Flame, normally a pillar of flame from the ground, erupts at the opponent's feet instead. So the portal is not just a movement tool — it relocates her entire offence.
- A true left/right mix-up, which very little of the roster has to defend against
- Two Dark Portals can be out at once, so the guess has more than two answers
- Portals relocate her projectiles as well as her body — the whole kit moves
- Soulsword Slice cancels into Teleport before or after it lands, so pressure never truly ends
- Darkchild is a scaling Ultimate: more gauge spent means a longer powered state
- Highest execution and highest knowledge requirement in the game
- Without a portal on screen she is a fairly ordinary rushdown character
- Setting portals costs time an aggressive opponent will not give her
- Queen of Limbo ends Darkchild, so the powered state has a cash-out dilemma
- Fragile — no armour, and the shared Vital Gauge punishes her mistakes team-wide
Magik Game Plan
Magik has two modes and you should always know which one you are in: portal on screen and no portal on screen. They are almost different characters.
| State | What you are doing | Key tools |
|---|---|---|
| No portal | Playing honestly, looking for a moment to set one | Demon Fire, Rising Soul, Soulsword Slice |
| One portal | Threatening a side switch | Teleport, Teleport Slash, Demon Fire through the portal |
| Two portals | The opponent genuinely cannot pre-block | Everything — this is the win condition |
Neutral. Without a portal, play a straightforward rushdown game. Demon Fire is a normal fireball, Rising Soul is a rising attack with invincibility to air attacks partway up, and Soulsword Slice is repeated slashes that cancel into Teleport before or after they land — which is your safety valve, since a blocked Soulsword Slice does not have to end with you standing there.
Setting up. Dark Portal places a portal positioned by the direction you hold, and two can be out at once. The second portal is what turns a coinflip into a real problem: the opponent has to account for both exits and for your projectiles changing origin. Place them at different heights, not side by side.
The mix-up. With a portal out, Teleport warps Magik next to the opponent with the exit direction under your control, and Teleport Slash attacks out of the warp with different behaviour on the ground and in the air. Meanwhile Demon Fire through the portal reappears next to them and Demon Flame erupts at their feet. So you can attack from the new side, or make them block a projectile from the new side and walk in from the old one.
Meter. Soulsword Sacrifice is a lunge into an attack string, and held near a Dark Portal she warps in to start it — a Super that is also a mix-up. Darkchild transforms her and strengthens her attacks, and critically more gauge spent means a longer state, so it is a scaling Ultimate rather than a fixed one. Queen of Limbo is the Darkchild-only finisher, and it ends the transformation.
Magik Key Moves
Only ten entries in Magik's command list, but three of them form the portal system that defines her.
Dark Portal
UniquePlaces a portal, positioned by direction. Two can be out at once.
The setup that everything else reads from. Places a portal positioned by direction, and two can be out at once.
- Place after knockdowns, not in neutral.
- Two portals at different heights is far stronger than two side by side.
Teleport
UniqueNear a Dark Portal, warps her next to the opponent, with the exit set by direction.
The mix-up. Near a Dark Portal it warps her next to the opponent with the exit set by the direction you hold — a genuine left/right guess.
Teleport Slash
UniquePressing Unique during a Teleport attacks out of the warp, differing on ground and air.
The attack out of the warp, with different behaviour on the ground and in the air. Without it the teleport is just movement.
Demon Fire
Skills25 Skill GaugeFireball projectile. Passing through a Dark Portal makes it reappear next to the opponent.
A normal fireball that becomes something else through a portal — it reappears next to the opponent, which is a mix-up you can throw from full screen.
Demon Flame
Skills25 Skill GaugePillar of flame from the ground. Through a Dark Portal it erupts at the opponent's feet.
A flame pillar that, through a Dark Portal, erupts at the opponent's feet instead. The unblockable-looking half of the portal offence.
Soulsword Slice
Skills25 Skill GaugeRepeated slashes that cancel into Teleport before or after they land.
Repeated slashes that cancel into Teleport before or after they land. This is your pressure AND your escape from a blocked sequence.
- Cancelling a blocked Soulsword Slice into Teleport is how Magik survives her own aggression.
Rising Soul
Skills25 Skill GaugeRising attack that gains invincibility to air attacks partway up.
The anti-air. Rising attack that gains invincibility to air attacks partway up — her only genuinely defensive option.
Soulsword Sacrifice
Super Skills50 Skill GaugeLunge into an attack string. Held near a Dark Portal she warps in to start it.
A Super that doubles as a mix-up: held near a Dark Portal she warps in to start the string.
Darkchild
Ultimate Skills100 Skill GaugeTransforms into Darkchild, strengthening her attacks. More gauge spent means a longer state.
The Ultimate. Transforms into Darkchild and strengthens her attacks, with the state lasting longer the more gauge you spend.
Magik Combos
Portal-free basics
Learn this first, and learn to cancel the Soulsword Slice into Teleport when it is blocked.
Set a portal off a knockdown
Less damage, but you leave the exchange with the tool that makes the character work.
The left/right
The signature Magik sequence. They have to block the relocated fireball AND guess which side you arrive on.
Pressure that never ends
Soulsword Slice cancels into Teleport before or after it lands, so a blocked string becomes a new mix-up instead of your turn ending.
Darkchild commitment
100+ Skill Gauge — more gauge, longer stateDarkchild strengthens her attacks for the duration — spend the state running mix-ups, not looking for one big hit. Save Queen of Limbo for the round-ender.
Magik Team Synergy and Assists
Magik desperately wants an assist that buys her the moment to place a Dark Portal — that is the single most valuable thing a teammate can do for her. In return, a called Magik covering a teammate's blockstring adds a threat from an unexpected angle. She is usually a point or second character, since her setup wants the round to still be long.
StormSet weather plus set portals is two boards to track. Storm also buys the setup time Magik cannot take for herself.
DangerCalibrate devices and Dark Portals both punish standing still. The opponent runs out of safe screen.
Doctor DoomNullify Shield holds a space while Magik sets up behind it — a classic zoner-and-mix pairing.
Black Panther (Shuri)A left/right and a high/low on the same team is a genuinely miserable defensive problem. One warning: Magik is greedy with your Assemble Gauge. Every time you want a portal you will be tempted to call an assist to cover it, and that competes with the defensive Assist Guard Cancel you may need later. Decide before the round whether she is your point mix-up or your safe anchor — trying to be both is how Magik teams run dry.

Against pressure, stop trying to set portals and play the honest rushdown game — Soulsword Slice into Teleport is a legitimate escape, and Rising Soul is a real anti-air. Set up when you have earned a knockdown, not before.
Magik plays MARVEL Tōkon from somewhere else — Dark Portal changes where her projectiles come out and where she does, turning every exchange into a left/right guess. Magik is a Teleport Mix-Up / Portal Setplay, rated 5 out of 5 for difficulty. Their defining traits are Teleports, Portal setplay, Left/right mix, Transformation.

Magik How to Play FAQ
How does Dark Portal work for Magik in MARVEL Tōkon?
Dark Portal places a portal on screen, positioned by the direction you hold, and up to two can be out at once. Portals change two things: Magik's Teleport can warp her next to the opponent with the exit set by direction, and her projectiles behave differently through them — Demon Fire reappears next to the opponent and Demon Flame erupts at their feet instead of rising from where she stands.
Is Magik the hardest character in MARVEL Tōkon?
She is generally the hardest to play well. Magik asks you to track two portal positions, choose a teleport exit direction, and confirm damage off hits that can come from either side, all while an opponent tries to deny you the time to set up. Without a portal on screen she is a fairly ordinary rushdown character, so the payoff only exists once the setup does.
What is Magik's mix-up in MARVEL Tōkon?
A left/right, which is rarer and harder to defend than the high/low most of the roster uses. With a Dark Portal out, Teleport warps her next to the opponent with the exit side under your control and Teleport Slash attacks out of the warp. Because guard direction depends on which side she is standing on, the opponent has to guess a side rather than a height.
When should Magik place Dark Portals?
After knockdowns, after a Break, or while an assist is covering her. Placing a portal in open neutral is a free punish for the opponent. The portal is worth far more than the damage you skipped to place it, so take a shorter combo that ends in a knockdown and spend the recovery time setting up.
How much gauge should Magik spend on Darkchild?
As much as you can afford. Darkchild is a scaling Ultimate — the state lasts longer the more gauge you spend, so 150 buys meaningfully more time than 100. Spend that time running portal mix-ups rather than hunting one big hit, and only use Queen of Limbo, which ends the transformation, when the damage closes the round.
Who counters Magik in MARVEL Tōkon?
Characters who deny setup time. Wolverine's Berserker strings never give her a free moment to place a portal. Captain America has a reliable anti-air and Shield Guard to punish sloppy teleports. Carnage forces her to defend Necrosis pressure, and a defending Magik is not setting up. Against all of them, play her honest rushdown game and only set portals off earned knockdowns.
