Storm Playstyle and Archetype

Archetype

Setplay Zoner / Flight Control

Storm builds a board — a Tornado here, a Hailstone there — and then plays it. Tempest repositions everything including the opponent, so a screen that looked safe a second ago is suddenly a trap.

Free FlightScreen controlSet attacksTempest
Difficulty

The mistake new Storm players make is treating Tornado and Hailstone as projectiles. They are not; they are furniture. They linger, they occupy a piece of the screen, and they make the opponent route around them. The value is not the hit, it is that the opponent now has fewer safe places to stand — and Tempest exists to make sure the place they picked was the wrong one.

Storm also has one of the more unusual gauge stories in MARVEL Tōkon. Tempest costs a Tempest stock, and Cold Embrace — a freezing grab that also causes a horizontal Break — refills gauge on hit. So her grab is not just a mix-up option, it is the refuel. After Eye of the Storm, her Ultimate, the Tempest Gauge refills faster for a stretch.

Pros
  • Tornado and Hailstone linger, so she controls space without spending her turn
  • Tempest moves the opponent AND her set attacks — a repositioning tool nobody else has
  • Free Flight gives her the mobility to stay above the board she has built
  • Cold Embrace refills gauge on hit and causes a Break, so her grab funds the gameplan
  • Hurricane grows any Tornado already on screen, so meter compounds with setup
Cons
  • Slow to start — an aggressive opponent who never lets her set anything beats the gameplan outright
  • Tempest costs a stock, so her best tool is rationed
  • Fragile in close quarters; she has no armour and no invincible reversal
  • Two set attacks plus flight plus Tempest stocks is a lot to track under pressure
  • Setup she cannot use is setup she wasted — bad Tornado placement actively hurts

Storm Game Plan

Storm plays in three beats: place, threaten, rearrange. Skipping straight to the third is the most common way to waste a Tempest stock.

BeatToolsGoal
PlaceTornado (ground), Hailstone (air)Take away safe standing room
ThreatenLightning Strike, Whirlwind, Free FlightMake them commit to a position
RearrangeTempestMove them into the thing you placed
The Storm loop — do them in order

Neutral. Lightning Strike is the workhorse: fast recovery on block, and Storm can drift while it happens, so it is safe pressure that does not cost her position. Set a Tornado at range when you get a free moment — Heavy makes two — and Hailstone from the air for the vertical half of the board. Heavy Hailstone adds hits.

Movement. Whirlwind is a lunge wrapped in wind and its versions matter: Medium rises into Free Flight, which is her cleanest way to get airborne while attacking, and Heavy keeps attacking. The aerial version floats on Medium before dropping. Combined with Free Flight, Storm should almost never be standing still on the ground in neutral.

Offense. Storm's opening usually comes from the opponent running out of room rather than from a mix-up. Pin them with a Tornado, threaten with Lightning Strike, and go for Cold Embrace when they stop moving — it grabs and freezes, causes a horizontal Break, and refills gauge on hit, which pays for the next Tempest.

Meter. Hurricane is a huge whirlwind around her that also grows any Tornado already on screen — so a Super used with setup on the board is worth far more than one used in a vacuum. Eye of the Storm is massive forward lightning that is strongest point blank, and afterwards the Tempest Gauge refills faster. Both reward you for having done the setup work first.

Storm Key Moves

Ten command list entries, and the two set attacks plus Tempest are what make her Storm rather than a generic zoner.

Tempest

PSR1XboxRB

Screen-wide wind that moves both fighters and her set attacks. Costs one Tempest stock.

The reason to play Storm. Screen-wide wind that moves both fighters AND her set attacks, for one Tempest stock. No other character can rearrange the board after the fact.

  • Use it after they commit to a position, not before.
  • Remember it moves your Tornado too — you can pull a trap onto them rather than pushing them into it.

The refuel. A grab that freezes, causes a horizontal Break, and refills gauge on hit — so landing it funds the next Tempest.

  • Go for it when the opponent has stopped moving because of a Tornado. That is the whole setup.

Storm Team Synergy and Assists

Assist roleLockdown / space-denial assist

A called Storm can leave a Tornado or a Hailstone on screen for someone else's pressure, which is one of the most valuable assist effects in MARVEL Tōkon — it is lockdown that persists after the assist has left. She is usually happier in a second or third slot than on point, because she needs the opponent occupied while she sets up.

Storm is one of the strongest arguments for actually learning Tōkon Assemble rather than treating your team as four separate characters. Her setup time has to come from somewhere, and a well-timed Assist Attack is where it comes from.

Storm Matchups

Every bad Storm matchup is a character who denies setup time. Against them, stop trying to build the full board — use Lightning Strike and Whirlwind Medium to stay mobile, take single Tornado placements when you get them, and hold Tempest stocks purely as an escape rather than a punish.

Storm is MARVEL Tōkon's setplay queen — she leaves Tornado and Hailstone on the screen, then uses Tempest to move both her traps and the opponent at the same time. Storm is a Setplay Zoner / Flight Control, rated 4 out of 5 for difficulty. Their defining traits are Free Flight, Screen control, Set attacks, Tempest.

Storm How to Play FAQ

What does Tempest do for Storm in MARVEL Tōkon?

Tempest is Storm's Unique move and the heart of her gameplan. It creates a screen-wide wind that moves both fighters and her own set attacks — Tornado and Hailstone — at the same time, at the cost of one Tempest stock. That lets Storm rearrange the screen after the opponent has already committed to a position, either pushing them into a trap or pulling a trap onto them.

How do you play Storm in MARVEL Tōkon?

Play in three beats. First place: set a Tornado on the ground and a Hailstone in the air to take away safe standing room. Second threaten: use Lightning Strike and Whirlwind, staying mobile with Free Flight, until the opponent commits to a position. Third rearrange: spend a Tempest stock to move them into what you placed. Skipping to the third beat is the most common Storm mistake.

How does Storm refill her Tempest Gauge?

Cold Embrace, her 623 grab, refills gauge on hit — it also freezes the opponent and causes a horizontal Break. Her Ultimate, Eye of the Storm, makes the Tempest Gauge refill faster afterwards. So the intended loop is that landing your grab and your Ultimate funds the Tempest stocks that make everything else work.

Is Storm hard to play in MARVEL Tōkon?

Yes, Storm is one of the more demanding characters. You are managing two kinds of set attack, Free Flight, Tempest stocks and the usual Skill Gauge, and her payoff only arrives after setup that an aggressive opponent will try to deny. She is also fragile up close with no armour and no invincible reversal.

Who counters Storm in MARVEL Tōkon?

Characters who deny her setup time. Wolverine's Berserker strings never give her a free moment and X-Force erases projectiles. Magik's teleports ignore the board completely and put her next to Storm regardless of what is on screen. Spider-Man's Web Zip closes distance faster than Storm can rebuild it. Against all three, stay mobile and hold Tempest stocks as an escape rather than a punish.

When should Storm use Hurricane in MARVEL Tōkon?

When there is already a Tornado on screen. Hurricane is a huge whirlwind around her that also grows any Tornado already out, so the same 50 Skill Gauge is worth substantially more with setup on the board than in a vacuum. Setting a Heavy Tornado for two of them and then using Hurricane is the strongest version of the sequence.
