Hulk (Bruce Banner) is presented as part of Fighting Avengers in MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, alongside Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther (Shuri). This page covers their identity, their team, the character-specific systems on their engine record and their movelist.
Hulk Playstyle and Archetype
Armoured Brawler
Hulk trades speed for the right to ignore your first hit. He builds Gamma Level with Gamma Spark, reaches Gamma Rage at Level 3, and then forces the opponent to deal with a charged punch that cannot be blocked.
Hulk is not a grappler and he is not really a zoner, though Thunder Clap erases projectiles well enough to make zoners uncomfortable. He is a character built around one question: what do you do about armour? Several of his Skills gain armour partway through, so the ordinary answer to a slow approach — press a button — stops working. The opponent has to throw him, hit him before the armour starts, or hold guard, and Gamma Rage exists specifically to punish the third option.
That makes him mechanically simple but strategically pointed. There are only two things to track: your Gamma Level, and whether you are in Gamma Rage. Everything else is a normal fighting game character with better-than-normal defence and worse-than-normal speed.
- Armour on several Skills — he beats opponents who want to press buttons on his approach
- Thunder Clap erases projectiles, so zoners cannot simply hold him out
- Gamma Rage makes his fully charged Command Normal unblockable — a real guard-break threat
- Skull Crush is an anti-air with armour partway and a slam follow-up
- Very high damage per opening; he does not need many touches
- Slow. Against Free Flight characters he can be avoided rather than fought
- Armour is not invincibility — throws and multi-hit attacks go straight through the plan
- Rampage hits harder in Gamma Rage but ENDS the state, which is a genuine dilemma
- Gamma Bomb outside Gamma Rage does not do damage-first — it maxes the Gamma Level instead
- Big body, so cross-ups and air pressure hit him more reliably than most
Hulk Game Plan
Hulk's gameplan in MARVEL Tōkon has a clear order of operations: get to Gamma Rage, then make the unblockable a problem. Everything before that is just getting there safely.
| State | What it gives you | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Gamma Level 1–2 | Armour on Skills, normal damage | Build with Gamma Spark, use armour to walk in |
| Gamma Level 3 → Gamma Rage | Charged Command Normal becomes unblockable | Threaten the unblockable, force them to move |
| In Gamma Rage | Rampage hits harder — but using it ends the state | Decide: cash out now, or keep the guard-break threat |
Neutral. Walk. Hulk has no movement gimmick, and that is fine — his job is to make walking forward safe. Thunder Clap erases projectiles and has armour available, so it is both your approach and your answer to a zoner. Violent Charge covers horizontal ground with armour partway through and a follow-up on hit. Against someone jumping around you, Skull Crush is a leaping strike with armour partway and a slam follow-up.
Building Gamma. Gamma Spark raises the Gamma Level and gives armour partway through the move itself, which is the important part — it is not a free-time-only move. You can use it inside pressure as an armoured option and get paid in Gamma Level for it. From the air, Giant Stomp hits grounded opponents and links straight into Gamma Spark, which is the cleanest way to build a level while doing something useful.
Offense. Once you are in Gamma Rage, Command Normal charges a huge punch that is unblockable in the state. That single fact changes how the opponent has to play: holding guard stops being safe, so they have to move — and moving into an armoured Hulk is exactly what you want. The unblockable does not need to land often. It needs to exist.
Defense. Hulk has no reversal in the traditional sense. Skull Crush is strong against air opponents but not invincible, so on defence you are relying on Guard, Guard Cancel Attack and Assist Guard Cancel like everyone else. His large body means cross-ups land more often on him than on the rest of the roster — expect to block more than you would like.
Hulk Key Moves
Eleven entries in the command list, but three of them are the character.
Gamma Spark
UniqueRaises Gamma Level and gives armour partway. At Level 3 it triggers Gamma Rage.
The engine of the character. Raises Gamma Level, gives armour partway, and at Level 3 it triggers Gamma Rage. Every Hulk gameplan is a plan to press this move safely.
- It has armour during the move, so it is usable inside pressure, not just in free time.
- Level 3 is the goal. Everything before it is setup.
Command Normal
UniqueCharges a huge punch. Fully charged it blows the opponent away, and is unblockable in Gamma Rage.
The payoff. A charged punch that blows the opponent away at full charge — and is unblockable in Gamma Rage. This is why Gamma Rage matters.
- The threat is worth more than the hit. Make them move, then armour through whatever they do.
Thunder Clap
Skills25 Skill GaugeClaps out a shockwave that erases projectiles, with armour available and follow-ups on hit.
The answer to zoners. Claps out a shockwave that erases projectiles, with armour available and follow-ups on hit.
- Against Magneto or Doctor Doom this is how you get down the screen at all.
Violent Charge
Skills25 Skill GaugeHorizontal charging attack with a follow-up option and armour partway through.
Your horizontal approach. Armour partway through and a follow-up option, so it is a committed move that is hard to simply beat.
Skull Crush
Skills25 Skill GaugeLeaping strike with a slam follow-up and armour partway through. Strong against air opponents.
Anti-air. A leaping strike with a slam follow-up and armour partway, strong against air opponents — which matters a lot on a roster this air-heavy.
Giant Stomp
UniqueStomps the ground from the air to hit grounded opponents, linking into Gamma Spark.
The clean Gamma builder. Stomps grounded opponents from the air and links into Gamma Spark, so you get a level out of an approach.
Seismic Smash
SkillsTears up a piece of the stage and swings it. Heavy adds a follow-up.
Tears up a piece of the stage and swings it. Heavy adds a follow-up — a good ranged poke for a character who otherwise has none.
Rampage
Super Skills50 Skill GaugeA single huge strike. Hits harder in Gamma Rage, but using it ends the state.
Your Super, and the state dilemma. Hits harder in Gamma Rage, but using it ends the state.
Gamma Bomb
Ultimate Skills100 Skill GaugeLeaps up and craters the ground. Outside Gamma Rage it maxes the Gamma Level instead.
The Ultimate with a twist: outside Gamma Rage it maxes the Gamma Level instead of doing its full job. That makes it a legitimate resource move, not only a finisher.
- Using it outside Rage to jump straight to max Gamma is a real, often-correct option.
Hulk Combos
Basic confirm
The universal chain into Violent Charge. Simple, high damage, and it carries the opponent toward the corner.
Build a Gamma Level off a hit
Less damage than the full chain, but you leave the exchange one level closer to Gamma Rage. Early in a round this is usually the better trade.
Air-to-ground into Gamma
The cleanest builder in the kit — an approach and a Gamma Level from one sequence.
Anti-air punish
Skull Crush already contains its own follow-up. Against the air-heavy half of the roster you will use this constantly.
Gamma Rage cash-out
50 Skill Gauge, ends Gamma RageOnly do this when the damage closes the round. Otherwise the unblockable threat is worth more than the bigger Rampage.
Hulk Team Synergy and Assists
An armoured Hulk called into someone else's blockstring is genuinely hard to deal with, because the usual answer — press a button in the gap — loses to armour. He is also a strong anchor: an incoming Hulk with Gamma already built forces the opponent to solve the unblockable while they are trying to close out.
Iron ManMissiles pin, Hulk walks. The opponent cannot patiently block both, and Fighting Avengers gets to cover both planes.
StormStorm's set Tornado and Hailstone occupy space while Hulk builds Gamma. Two slow characters that make each other fast.
MagnetoMagnetise plus an armoured charge is a mean combination — the opponent is being pulled toward the thing they are trying to avoid.
Captain AmericaA shield on screen means the opponent is blocking when Hulk arrives, which is exactly when armour is worth the most.Hulk badly wants a partner who can cover the space he cannot cross quickly. He does not need help with damage — he needs help getting to the opponent. Anything that forces the opponent to hold still for half a second is worth more to Hulk than a damage assist.
Hulk Matchups

Armour does not help against an opponent who is not attacking.StormTempest moves both fighters, which undoes the ground Hulk spent the round gaining.BladeMulti-hit slashes eat through armour, and Heart Stopper keeps chipping from a range Hulk cannot punish.Everything Hulk struggles with is mobile. Against flight characters, stop trying to catch them and start using Thunder Clap and Seismic Smash to make the space they want to land in unsafe — then armour through whatever they try on the way down.
Hulk walks through attacks instead of blocking them — Gamma Spark builds toward Gamma Rage, and Gamma Rage turns his charged punch into an unblockable. Hulk is a Armoured Brawler, rated 2 out of 5 for difficulty. Their defining traits are Armour, Gamma Rage, Huge damage, Slow.

Hulk How to Play FAQ
How does Gamma Rage work for Hulk in MARVEL Tōkon?
Hulk builds Gamma Level using Gamma Spark, which also gives him armour partway through the move. At Gamma Level 3, Gamma Rage triggers. In Gamma Rage his fully charged Command Normal becomes unblockable, and his Super, Rampage, hits harder — but using Rampage ends Gamma Rage. Gamma Bomb, his Ultimate, maxes the Gamma Level instead of its usual effect if used outside Gamma Rage.
Is Hulk good for beginners in MARVEL Tōkon?
Hulk is a good second character for a beginner. He is mechanically simple — there are only two things to track, your Gamma Level and whether you are in Gamma Rage — and armour on his Skills forgives a lot of mistakes in neutral. The catch is that he is slow, so he punishes impatience differently: you will lose rounds to flight characters you simply cannot catch.
How do you beat blocking with Hulk in MARVEL Tōkon?
Reach Gamma Rage and threaten the charged Command Normal, which is unblockable in that state. You do not need to land it often — the threat forces the opponent to stop holding guard and start moving, and moving into an armoured Hulk is exactly the situation you want. Outside Gamma Rage, use Throw and the follow-ups on Violent Charge and Seismic Smash.
What beats Hulk's armour in MARVEL Tōkon?
Throws go straight through armour, and multi-hit attacks chew through it quickly since armour absorbs rather than ignores. Mobility also beats it indirectly — an opponent using Free Flight or Multi-Dash simply is not attacking into the armour at all. Iron Man, Storm and Doctor Doom all beat Hulk this way rather than by fighting him.
What is Hulk's best anti-air in MARVEL Tōkon?
Skull Crush, his 623 Skill. It is a leaping strike with a slam follow-up and armour partway through, and it is described as strong against air opponents. It is not invincible, so it is an anti-air rather than a general reversal — press it as they commit to the jump, not once they are already on top of you.
Who should you pair with Hulk in MARVEL Tōkon?
Anything that makes the opponent hold still. Hulk does not need help with damage, he needs help closing distance. Iron Man's Smart Missiles, Storm's set Tornado and Hailstone, Magneto's Magnetise and Captain America's Shield Strike all force the opponent to block or reposition, which is exactly when Hulk's armour is worth the most.
