How hunger and saturation work

Straight from the game's food code (Java 26.3).

  • Hunger is the visible bar (20 points, 10 shanks). Saturation is a hidden reserve that drains first: every 4 points of exhaustion (running, jumping, fighting) cost 1 saturation, and only once it's empty do you lose hunger.
  • Eating adds the food's saturation, but your saturation can never be higher than your current hunger level — eat high-saturation food when your bar is fairly full.
  • With a full bar (20) and saturation left you heal fast, every half second. At 18 hunger or more you heal 1 health every 4 seconds. At 0 hunger you starve: 1 damage every 4 seconds (down to 10 health on Easy, 1 on Normal, and to death on Hard).
  • 5 foods carry a harmful effect — the chart shows those effects in red, and the filter above hides them.

Minecraft Java 26.3 has 40 foods. Golden Carrot gives the most saturation (14.4), Rabbit Stew the most hunger (10) and Golden Apple the best saturation per hunger point (2.4). Dried Kelp is the quickest to eat at 0.8 seconds; 5 foods have a harmful effect.

Minecraft food FAQ (Java 26.3)

What is the best food in Minecraft?

Golden Carrot is the best everyday food: it gives 14.4 saturation, the most of any food without a bad effect. Rabbit Stew restores the most hunger at once (10 points).

What is saturation in Minecraft?

Saturation is a hidden reserve on top of the hunger bar. It drains before hunger does, and it can't be higher than your current hunger level, so foods with more saturation keep you full much longer.

Golden Apple, with 2.4 saturation per hunger point among foods that restore at least 2 shanks.

Which Minecraft foods are bad to eat?

5 foods have a harmful effect, for example Spider Eye, Poisonous Potato, Raw Chicken, Rotten Flesh, Pufferfish.

Which foods can you eat when you're not hungry?

Only these can be eaten with a full hunger bar: Enchanted Golden Apple, Golden Apple, Suspicious Stew, Chorus Fruit, Honey Bottle.
