Minecraft Nether Portal Calculator

Turn Overworld coordinates into Nether coordinates and back, so the portal you build links to the one you want.

Overworld : Nether
1 : 8
Portal search (Nether)
16 blocks
Portal search (Overworld)
128 blocks

One block in the Nether equals 8 in the Overworld: divide the Overworld X and Z by 8 to get the Nether spot (1,000 → 125), and multiply by 8 to go back. Y doesn't change. A portal links to the nearest portal within 16 blocks of that spot in the Nether, or 128 blocks in the Overworld.

Linking portals

  • Build the Nether portal at the converted coordinates; the game uses the closest existing portal within the search range, otherwise it creates a new one.
  • Two Overworld portals closer than 8 × 16 blocks apart can end up sharing one Nether portal — space them out or build both Nether sides by hand.

Nether coordinates are Overworld X and Z divided by 8. Portals link within 16 blocks in the Nether and 128 in the Overworld.
