The city's outskirts are a terrifying ruin, interwoven with the nightmare of the plague. The Shrike's call grows more insistent; is she in trouble? I should hurry. All signs point towards the lighthouse — I have a feeling she awaits me within it.

The lighthouse is in flames, undoubtedly blown up by Napoleon's troops. I must hurry before the French manage to seize the Shrike.

The city is almost completely deserted, with only the Mice remaining. They are orphans who serve the Shrike; they hide in nest-like burrows and whisper to me whenever they get the chance. They seem friendly, but one can never be too careful.

I didn't make it in time... The lighthouse has collapsed. Since that moment, the Shrike has stopped speaking to me. Has she perished? I must reach the ruins of the lighthouse and see for myself.

The Shrike was not in the lighthouse, and there was no sign of her dying there, either — she must have escaped, or was taken hostage. There's no other way out but into the high city, and that's where I'll go.

The sight of the city's ruins fills me with profound sorrow. It withstood the legions of Napoleon for a considerable span, yet ultimately succumbed, along with the spirit of its people. To seek the Shrike amidst these ruins is alike to searching for a single needle within a haystack.

The Mice seem to know where the Shrike is, but they won't tell me until I prove I'm their friend. It's hard to blame them for their distrust of strangers. Perhaps I can win them over.
