Minecraft Dungeons 2 Echo Shards & The Sift Guide
How to get Echo Shards in Minecraft Dungeons 2 (Dungeons, Rifts, bosses, Soul Storms; cap 100), plus how The Sift's three tides, Rifts and Soul Storms work.
The Sift is the headline feature of Minecraft Dungeons II: the first new Minecraft dimension in years, a sculk-and-ichor world where the rules change as a time cycle rolls over it. It is also where the story spends its last third, and where a lot of the game's best loot and enchantment books come from. Around it sit three systems that decide how fast you progress: Rifts, Dungeons and Soul Storms. All three pay out Echo Shards, the currency that gates enchanting, re-rolling and vendor upgrades.
This guide explains how the Sift tides work, what Rifts, Dungeons and Soul Storms actually reward, and how to build a routine that keeps you supplied with Echo Shards. The mechanics are quoted from the game's own tutorial log, and the regions, bosses and book pools come from the game files (build 1.1.1.0) behind our Minecraft Dungeons II database. Where a number is calculated rather than read directly, we say so.
How to get Echo Shards in Minecraft Dungeons 2
The tutorial log lists four sources of Echo Shards, and every farming plan comes down to chaining them.
- Dungeons: complete one for a payout.
- Rifts: complete one for a payout, plus enchantment books and gear.
- Bosses: defeating a boss pays shards, and beaten bosses can be fought again at their Boss Totem. See the boss guide.
- Soul Storms: participating in one pays shards, and the reward chest is the best loot roll in the game.
What are Echo Shards used for?
| Use | Vendor | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Enchanting an item | Enchantsmith | 1 Echo Shard per enchant in the game cost table, plus Enchantment Points |
| Upgrading an enchantment | Enchantsmith | Needs a leveled Enchantsmith; costs Echo Shards and Enchantment Points |
| Re-rolling item effects | Blacksmith | Rare at Blacksmith level 1, Special at 2, Unique at 3 |
| Refreshing merchant stock | Town Merchant | A small fee instead of waiting 30 minutes |
| Leveling Brave Haven vendors | All three | First upgrade at player level 15: 300 emeralds, 50 Echo Shards, 4 enchantment books |
The level 15 upgrade raises the Merchant and the Enchantsmith to level 2, which is when you can start upgrading the enchantments on your gear. See the costs on our progression page and every vendor location on the merchants page.
Best way to farm Echo Shards: a routine
The game does not publish how many shards each activity pays, so we will not pretend to know an exact rate. What the data does tell you is which activities pay at all, which ones also drop books and gear, and that you cannot bank more than 100. That is enough to build a sensible loop.
- 1Spend down before you start
Get below roughly 50 Echo Shards: re-roll an effect at the Blacksmith, upgrade an enchantment, or refresh the Town Merchant. You want room for every payout.
- 2Check the map for a Soul Storm
Storms appear randomly each hour and run for around 40 minutes. If one is up in a region at or below your level, go there first; it is the only timed source.
- 3Run the nearest Rift or Dungeon
They move between sessions, so take whichever is closest to a minecart station. Pick the type whose book pool you still need.
- 4Replay a boss at its Boss Totem
Bosses pay shards and never drop Common gear. Pick the fastest kill your build has.
- 5Spend again, then repeat
Teleport to Brave Haven, spend the shards on your build, and loop. Never carry a full stack into the next payout.
- Levels 1–15Save for the vendor upgrade
Your first 50 Echo Shards should go to the level 15 vendor upgrade, along with 300 emeralds and 4 enchantment books. It unlocks Rare stock at the Merchant and enchantment upgrades at the Enchantsmith.
- Levels 15–33Books first
Run Dungeons for the Deep Dark pool and overworld Rifts for books. Spend shards on enchanting your main weapon and armor.
- Levels 33+The Sift
Sift regions add the Sift book pool, Sift Soul Storms and the Monarch and Monstrosity fights. Shards shift to re-rolling Special and Unique effects at the Blacksmith.
- Soul Storms: best reward chest (about 20% Unique, calculated)
- Rifts and Dungeons: the only way to finish the regional book pools
- Bosses: repeatable any time at the Boss Totem, no Commons
- Soul Storms: random timing, you cannot summon one
- Rifts and Dungeons: locations change every session
- Bosses: the longest fights for a single payout
What is The Sift in Minecraft Dungeons 2?
The Sift is a separate map from the overworld, with its own Sift map, its own minecart network and its own region levels. The story reaches it after Frozen Highlands (recommended level 26), following the note-block quests that run through The Deep Dark. From there the game's progression table sets three Sift regions in order.
| Region | Recommended level | Notable places | Key quests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singer's Meadow | 33 | Choral Glen, Sifter Canyon, Singer's Portal, Wild Meadows | Lost Harmonies, A Monstrosity in the Meadow |
| Humbler Huskland | 36 | Humbler Husk | Wrath of the Sculkers, The Final Souldown |
| Lullaby Hills | 42 | Illager Stronghold | The Final Souldown Encore (replayable) |
Singer's Meadow opens the dimension with Lost Harmonies and the fight against the Sculk Monstrosity in A Monstrosity in the Meadow. Humbler Huskland is where the Monarch waits in Wrath of the Sculkers and where the story finale, The Final Souldown, plays out. Lullaby Hills, the highest-level region in the table at 42, hosts the replayable The Final Souldown Encore and side quests like Lonesome in Lullaby Hills.
The Sift has 9 minecart stations of its own (the overworld has 19), so activate them as you explore. Travel between the two maps is slow otherwise, and the Sift's terrain shifts enough that fast travel saves real time.
How do Sift tides work?
The Sift runs on a time cycle with three tides. The game's tutorial text describes them in one line each, and that is the whole rule set: the tides change how your souls, your artifacts and the enemies behave.
| Tide | Effect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Flow | No effect | Normal play; travel, loot chests, clear objectives |
| Thrive | Faster soul regeneration and artifact cooldowns | Take the hardest fights and spam artifacts |
| Endure | More powerful mobs spawn; passive soul regeneration stops | Lean on weapon damage and kill-based soul gain, or wait it out |
Playing the Thrive tide
Thrive is your window. Faster soul regeneration plus faster artifact cooldowns means an artifact-heavy build hits much harder than usual. If you run soul-hungry artifacts like the Corrupted Beacon or the Soul Harvester, Thrive is when to push objectives, open ambushes and take on a boss.
Surviving the Endure tide
Endure is the dangerous one. Stronger mobs spawn and your souls stop refilling on their own, so every artifact use has to be paid for with kills. Two ways to prepare: bring gear that increases souls gained, such as the Twisted Tooth talisman (40% to 140% more souls, a reward from Down into the Deep Dark) or the Unique Soul Reaper (60% more souls), and make sure your weapon can clear on its own. A melee weapon with a strong jump attack or a Heavy Crossbow does not care whether your soul meter is full.
What are Rifts and Dungeons?
Rifts and Dungeons are the game's procedurally generated areas. The tutorial log uses almost identical wording for both: many dangers, rare and powerful items, enchantment books, Echo Shards and more, and they often spawn in different places each session. Neither is a fixed location you can bookmark; check the map at the start of each session to see where they have appeared.
In the game files there are 12 rift markers placed around the overworld. Dungeons tie into The Deep Dark region, whose loot table includes a pool of Dungeon instances. Both are among the only places that drop the regional enchantment books below, which is the main reason to run them beyond the Echo Shards.
- Spawn in different places each session
- Drop enchantment books and Echo Shards
- Good gear along the way and at the end
- Also move between sessions
- The Deep Dark regional book pool
- Same Echo Shard and loot payout type
- Appear randomly every hour, last ~40 minutes
- More enemies, faster respawns
- Generous reward on completion
VerdictRun whatever is closest. All three pay Echo Shards; Rifts and Dungeons are how you complete your enchantment book collection, and Soul Storms are the best loot per chest.
Which enchantment books drop in Rifts, Dungeons and the Sift?
Enchantment books come from pools. A common pool of 11 books can drop from any area. On top of it, three regional pools of 6 books each drop only from their own areas, so each regional book is 1 in 6 from its pool. Three more books come from the quest Training with the Enchantsmith (Piercing, Healing Smite and Ancient Alchemy). Our enchanting guide explains what each one does and what it costs to apply.
| Pool | Where it drops | Books (1 in 6 each) |
|---|---|---|
| Deep Dark | Dungeon instances of The Deep Dark | Somersault, Shockwave, Tempo Theft, Shadowcloak, Springload, Ricochet |
| Ravines | Ravines instances (boss arenas and dungeon tiers) | Soul Blast, Artifact Amplifier, Gravity Pulse, Health Synergy, Bottomless Brew, Chain Reaction |
| The Sift | Sift boss and tier-1 instances | Swirling, Barrier Brew, Power Amplifier, Shielding Smite, Critical Quiver, Tumbleshot |
| Common | Any area | Fire Aspect, Poison Fog, Frost Crescent, Lightning Surge, Crash Landing, Buddy Brew, Cow Stampede, Ender Mines, Thundering, Dynamo, Ender Quiver |
If you want a specific book, go to its pool. Swirling and Tumbleshot only come from the Sift pool, Shadowcloak and Ricochet from the Deep Dark pool, and Chain Reaction and Health Synergy from the Ravines pool. The full Ravines loot table is on the Ravines location page.
What are Soul Storms?
Soul Storms are high-paced combat zones with more enemies and faster respawns than normal. According to the in-game guide they appear randomly in the world every hour and last around 40 minutes, and defeating one is "generously rewarded". The game files place 7 Soul Storm sites: 4 in the overworld and 3 in The Sift.
| Map | Regions with a Soul Storm site |
|---|---|
| Overworld | Honeycomb Fields, Howling Woods, Rainy Plains, Frozen Highlands |
| The Sift | Singer's Meadow, Humbler Huskland, Lullaby Hills |
The reward chest is the reason to go. The game's rarity table has its own rule for the Soul Storm reward chest (internally the "Storminator" chest): Common rolls are removed and Rare rolls are cut to 1% of their normal weight. Worked through the default weights, that leaves a chest roll at roughly 79% Special, 20% Unique and 1% Rare. That is the best Unique chance of any source in the table; a boss drop is about 17% and a regular drop 5%. Our Unique items farming guide compares every source.
| Source | Rare | Special | Unique |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular drop | 25% | 20% | 5% |
| Fancy chest | 50% | 40% | 10% |
| Boss | 50% | 33% | 17% |
| Soul Storm reward chest | 1% | 79% | 20% |
The game files also contain 700-health versions of the Redstone Monstrosity, Copper Monstrosity and Sculk Monstrosity, tagged with the same Soul Storm naming. The story versions have 2,400, 2,400 and 2,000 health. Expect a shorter Monstrosity fight to cap some storms rather than a full story boss, and check each boss page's versions section for its attacks.
Sift bosses at a glance
Three story bosses belong to the Sift arc, and the finale brings back two more. Full attack lists, resistances and replay quests are in our boss guide and on each boss page.
| Boss | Health | Where | Resists / weak to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sculk Monstrosity | 2,000 | Singer's Meadow | Takes 50% more fire damage; resists soul |
| Monarch | 1,400 | Humbler Huskland | Resists soul (takes half) |
| Redstone Monstrosity | 2,400 | The Final Souldown | Takes 50% more ice damage; resists fire and blast |
| Monstrous Opus | 2,000 | The Final Souldown | No listed resistances |
| The Supreme Evoker | 1,000 | The Final Souldown | No listed resistances |
Note the pattern: the Monarch and the Sculk Monstrosity both resist soul damage, which is the Sift's own damage type. If your build leans on Soul Blast or soul artifacts, carry a fire option for the Monstrosity. The finale strings the Redstone Monstrosity, Monstrous Opus and The Supreme Evoker together, so arrive with full potions and your soul meter topped up, ideally during a Thrive tide.

Guide FAQ
How do you get to The Sift in Minecraft Dungeons 2?
By following the main story. After Frozen Highlands the story moves into the Sift's first region, Singer's Meadow (recommended level 33), through the note-block quests that start in Howling Woods and The Deep Dark.
What do the Sift tides do?
Flow has no effect. Thrive gives faster soul regeneration and artifact cooldowns. Endure spawns more powerful mobs and stops your passive soul regeneration.
How do you get Echo Shards fast in Minecraft Dungeons 2?
Chain the four sources: join Soul Storms when they appear, run the nearest Rift or Dungeon, and replay bosses at their Boss Totems. Spend your shards between runs, because you can only hold 100.
What is the Echo Shard cap?
100. The in-game guide says Echo Shards are so heavy that you can carry a maximum of 100, so anything earned over the cap is lost.
How often do Soul Storms spawn?
According to the in-game guide, Soul Storms appear randomly in the world every hour and last around 40 minutes. There are 4 Soul Storm sites in the overworld and 3 in The Sift.
Where do Rifts spawn in Minecraft Dungeons 2?
Rifts are procedurally generated and often spawn in different places each session, so check the map when you log in. The game files place 12 rift markers around the overworld.
