My Beloved,
You ask me not to believe the stories carried home by soldiers, yet each new regiment tells the same tale. They speak of a General who wins every battle, but also punishes his own soldiers with a severity that frightens even his officers.
That is not the husband I kissed goodbye.
And these voices you hear... my love, it scares me deeply that you write about it so lightly. It almost seems that you are proud, that you hear the Emperor's voice in your head, giving orders or screaming at you with disappointment. Promise me you will speak to the surgeon about that!
