Mice friendship: the hidden choice that pays 30,000 Catalysts

Game data

Valor Mortis tracks one hidden relationship counter, Mice friendship. Earn at least 10 of the 22 points in The Outskirts and the City of Orphans, and the Mice reward you in the last two regions.

22Mice points available
1010 needed
14Talk / finish the step
30,000Giant Whisker Gift · Catalysts

The counter is checked 15 times: 14 conversations in Napoleon's Prison (one of them gives 3 Special Cartridges) and once by the Mouse King in Entropy, who gives the Giant Whisker Gift — 30,000 Catalysts when used — and the Mice's Key, which opens a safe shortcut through the nightmare realm.

Every point comes from The Outskirts (6) and the City of Orphans (16). Napoleon's Prison and Entropy have no fast travel and offer no new points, so your total is locked in once you climb the Fortress's High Tower.

14 points need no dialogue choice — you get them for talking to the Mice and finishing their quests. The other 8 come from picking the friendly answer. The three Mice quests alone are worth 8: The Shrike's Anthem (+3), Mummy and Daddy with the parents spared (+3) and Afraid of the Dark (+2). Add the two free Outskirts conversations and you're at 10 without a single dialogue choice.

The one way to lose a big chunk is Mummy and Daddy: kill the possessed parents and the journal says the Mice swear never to aid you again.

What the Mice give back

  • Napoleon's Prison: 14 conversations check for 10+ points; one gives Special Cartridges ×3.

  • Entropy: the Mouse King checks for 10+ points and gives Giant Whisker Gift, Mice's Key.

Is there more than one ending?

Game data

No. The game files contain one ending sequence, played out in Entropy after the final boss. The choices in that final conversation change the dialogue, not the outcome — no ending variant, flag or reward hangs on them.

What does change is what you carry into it: the Giant Whisker Gift and Mice's Key from the Mice, the Ambers and Catalysts you picked up along the way, and which side quests ended well. None of the 15 choices on this page locks or unlocks a different ending.

Valor Mortis records 15 consequential choices across 6 regions, from meeting James at the Abandoned Church to the Mice's questions in the City of Orphans. Only 2 change the loot: Sleeping Beauty (the material either way, 2,000 or 3,000 Catalysts) and Misericorde (3,000 Catalysts for ending the soldier's suffering). 8 of the choices add Mice friendship, the counter behind the game's biggest single reward — a 30,000-Catalyst Giant Whisker Gift. There is one ending; plan your Mice points before the High Tower and the rest is roleplay.

Valor Mortis choices FAQ

Do choices matter in Valor Mortis?

Mostly for flavour. The game has 15 consequential choices; only 2 change your rewards — Sleeping Beauty and Misericorde — and the rest set story flags. The choice that matters most is hidden: Mice friendship, worth the Giant Whisker Gift (30,000 Catalysts) and the Mice's Key.

How many endings does Valor Mortis have?

One. The game files contain a single ending sequence; the choices in the final conversation change dialogue, not the outcome.

How do you get the Giant Whisker Gift and the Mice's Key?

Reach at least 10 Mice friendship points before Napoleon's Prison. 22 are available — 6 in The Outskirts and 16 in the City of Orphans. The Mouse King in Entropy then gives you the Giant Whisker Gift (30,000 Catalysts) and the Mice's Key.

What's the quickest way to 10 Mice friendship?

Finish the three Mice quests — The Shrike's Anthem (+3), Mummy and Daddy without killing the parents (+3) and Afraid of the Dark (+2) — and talk to the Mice in The Outskirts (+2). That's 10 with no dialogue choices. The guessing game and two other City of Orphans conversations add 4 more free points, and the friendly answers up to 8 more, so there's plenty of buffer.

Should you let her sleep or wake her up in Sleeping Beauty?

'Let Her Sleep' pays a Distilled Transmutation Material and 2,000 Catalysts immediately. 'Wake her up' pays nothing at the choice, but the quest's second reward branch lists Distilled Transmutation Material and 3,000 Catalysts. Both give the material, so choose on story.

What should you do in Misericorde?

'End his suffering.' pays a Remnant's Return and 3,000 Catalysts; 'Do nothing.' pays only the Remnant's Return. It's the only choice with a clean reward difference.

Should Louis go with you or stay in Fallen Village?

Either. 'Go together.' and 'Stay.' both finish Chapter III; the files only record where Louis goes, and neither option carries a reward.

Can you still get Mice friendship after the Fortress?

No. All 22 points come from The Outskirts and the City of Orphans. Napoleon's Prison and Entropy only check your total, and neither has fast travel back.
