SpoilerAbout James Stewart (journal entry)

At the camp I encountered a jovial fellow named James, who claims that we were friends during the war. If this is indeed the case, then I must count myself fortunate. James is a skilled gunsmith and appears to be a good soul. His hearty laughter is one of the few things that brings a measure of light to the gloom that hangs over this place.

SpoilerAbout Louis Moreau (journal entry)

Louis is a curious man. At first glance, he appears cold and rather brusque, as though he fears putting aside the armour of his arrogance. He claims to be a physician and speaks at length in a complicated manner, as if possessed of considerable learning in the medical sciences.

His thoughts seem constantly occupied with the research he once conducted. A most intriguing character.

  • The world holds more than enough of every material tier the merchants sell to max all weapons, so buying them only gets an upgrade sooner. The scarce Tier 4 materials are never sold.
  • Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrades are the exception: fully upgrading the Flask takes 24, the world gives 23, so buy at least 1 from Louis.
  • 16 items are in unlimited stock (Pistol Cartridges, Deadly Rounds, Whetstone, Hand Grenade, Special Cartridges, Mighty Rounds…), so ammunition and coatings only cost Catalysts. The cheapest is the Pistol Cartridges at 200.
  • Neither merchant sells Catalyst Clots, and selling a Clot pays exactly what using it gives, so keep them for levelling.

The game files also hold a third shop, Lucjan's Knapsack, with a three-item stock, but it is never placed in the world. Lucjan Skawiński

Shopping in Valor Mortis means two benches at the Abandoned Church: James's Iron Bench for the steel and the guns, Louis's Laboratoire for the vials and Nephtoglobin work. Each has three stock tiers, opening after Chapters 5 and 9, and the same benches double as the upgrade stations for blades, firearms and Transmutations. 16 items never run out, while materials come a few at a time; Tier 4 is never sold. The Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrade is the one item the world gives too few of: buy 1 from Louis to max the Flask. Everything else on sale is a shortcut rather than a necessity.
