Permafrost has 48 tools: axes, pickaxes, hammers and knives, each in 12 tiers (Stone, Flint, Scrap, Copper, Iron, Quality metal, Moon rock) plus 20 refined versions. You start with Stone Axe, Stone Sledgehammer, Stone Pickaxe, Stone Shiv; each higher tier needs the ore of the tier before it, so the ladders above double as a crafting progression. The Refined Moonrock Sledgehammer is the hardest-hitting tool at 40 damage. Axes level the Axes skill, pickaxes the Pickaxes skill and knives the Knives skill; each skill lowers durability use or raises gathering damage per level.

What are the tool tiers in Permafrost?
Tools come in 12 tiers: Stone, Flint, Scrap, Copper, Iron, Quality metal, Moon rock. Each type (axe, pickaxe, hammer, knife) has one tool per tier, plus refined versions.
What tools do you start with?
The first quest has you craft a stone tool by hand; Stone Axe, Stone Sledgehammer, Stone Pickaxe, Stone Shiv are the stone-tier set.
What is the best tool?
The Refined Moonrock Sledgehammer deals 40 damage per hit, the most of any tool in the preview build.
What does refined mean?
Refined tools are upgraded versions of a tier made with processed materials; they keep the tier's mining ability with better numbers.
How do you repair tools?
Each tool page lists the repair cost, usually a few units of the material it was made from.
