How to Stay Warm in Permafrost: Insulation, Body Warmth & Cold Statuses
The warmest clothing per slot, how thermal insulation adds up, which heaters and braziers to build, the foods that restore Body Warmth, and the full cold status ladder from Low Temperature to Hypothermia.
Cold is Permafrost's real antagonist. Every piece of clothing carries a thermal insulation value, every heat source applies a Warmed or Heated status, and a handful of foods push Body Warmth back up. This guide ranks all of it with the game's own numbers so you can plan a loadout that survives White Hell rather than guessing which jacket looks thickest.
How warmth works
Your character has a Body Warmth attribute with separate base, gain and loss rates. Clothing raises Thermal Insulation, which slows the loss; heat sources and warming food raise Body Warmth directly. Clothing also wears out while worn — every tracked piece loses 2 durability per tick — so a 300-durability jacket has a finite life before it needs a repair at the Repair Bench (10 Wood + 10 Flint). The exact temperature thresholds are not exposed in the game data, so this guide sticks to the values that are.
The warmest piece for every slot
| Slot | Best | Insulation | Recipe (Tailoring Bench) | Runner-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Head | Permafrost Cloak | 50 | 9 Cloth, 3 Moonrock Ingot, 2 Quality Metal | Insulated Mountain Hat (46) |
| Torso | Permafrost Jacket | 50 | 18 Cloth, 6 Moonrock Ingot, 3 Quality Metal | Insulated Mountain Jacket (46) |
| Legs | Permafrost Pants | 50 | 15 Cloth, 5 Moonrock Ingot, 3 Quality Metal | Insulated Mountain Pants (46) |
| Feet | Permafrost Boots | 50 | 9 Cloth, 3 Moonrock Ingot, 2 Quality Metal | Insulated Mountain Boots (46) |
| Hands | Permafrost Gloves | 50 | 9 Cloth, 3 Moonrock Ingot, 2 Quality Metal | Insulated Mountain Gloves (46) |
| Rig | Electric Heater | worn heater | 2 Cloth, 2 Batteries (Crafting Bench) | Chemical Heater (2 Cloth, 2 Chemicals) |
Below those two sets the ladder is tidy: Military pieces give 45 insulation with 44 light armor (16 Cloth + 3 Quality Metal for the jacket), Technocrats pieces 41 (14 Cloth + 7 Scrap), Utility 38 (13 Cloth + 5 Iron Ingot), Scavenger and Renegade's 35 (20 Cloth + 4 Copper Ingot), Hybrid 32 (11 Cloth + 5 Treated Hide), and the animal hats — Bear Head Hat, Fox Head Hat, Wolf Head Hat — 35 each for 4 Cloth plus pelts. - Cheapest warm set: Cloth and Processed Plastic only
- Blueprint cost 0 — found in the world
- 200 durability, almost no armor
- Needs Quality Metal (Makeshift Smelter: 5 Iron + 5 Scrap)
- Up to 12 damage reduction on the jacket
- 300 durability; sells for 408 Bucks (jacket)
- Needs Moonrock Ingots (Professional Smelter) and 4 blueprint points per piece
- Unlocked through the main story (Electric Sheeps / Dressed for White Hell)
- The set the game 'named after the new era'
VerdictCraft Insulated Mountain gear as soon as you have a Tailoring Bench, switch to Military when you can smelt Quality Metal, and treat the Permafrost set as the White Hell endgame.
Heat sources: fires, braziers and heaters
| Structure | Cost | HP | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campfire | 2 Stone | 125 | Also cooks; the first quest builds one |
| Barrel Brazier | 2 Scrap | 125 | Cheapest scrap heater |
| Basket Brazier | 4 Scrap | 125 | Heats the surrounding area |
| Bowl Brazier | 6 Scrap | 125 | Keeps a fire pit alive through the night |
| Enhanced Barrel Brazier | 3 Quality Metal | 125 | Longer burn time, stronger light |
| Wooden Standing Torch | 3 Wood | 500 | Light and warmth on a pole |
| Wall Torch / Standing Torch | 2 Cloth, 1 Wood | 125 | Keeps the shelter lit and warm |
Worn heaters occupy the tactical-rig slot and apply the Heated status while active: the Makeshift Heater (2 Cloth + 2 Processed Plastic, a quest blueprint, 40 Bucks from Anna or Skinwalker), the Chemical Heater (2 Cloth + 2 Chemicals) and the Electric Heater (2 Cloth + 2 Batteries, 2 blueprint points, rewarded by the quest New Message). The main quest Going Further is explicitly about finding an upgraded heater blueprint before crossing the cold zone toward House Camp and the Solar Fields. See every heater on the items page.

The cold status ladder
- Stage 1Low Temperature
'You are in a very cold place, your Body Warmth starts to drop.' No remedy listed — move toward heat before the next stage.
- Stage 2Bone-Chilling Cold
'Extreme cold drains body warmth. Find shelter as soon as possible.' Remedy: leave the Cold Zone.
- Stage 3Deadly Cold Zone
'Freezing temperature rapidly saps warmth. Leave immediately or death will follow.' Shown on the HUD. Remedy: leave the Cold Zone.
- CollapseHypothermia
'You become drowsy, disoriented, and apathetic.' Deals damage based on the temperature difference. Remedy: regenerate Body Warmth — fire, heater, warm drink.
The Toughness skill (cap 25) is the only skill that scales damage reduction, and the quest Dressed for White Hell exists because the game expects you to wear the Permafrost set before the final region. Cold zones also hold a Deep Snow status that heavily restricts movement — plan routes, not sprints. Every status and its remedy is on the status effects page.

Guide FAQ
What is the warmest clothing in Permafrost?
The Permafrost Armor Set: Cloak, Jacket, Pants, Boots and Gloves each have 50 thermal insulation and 50 frost armor. It needs Moonrock Ingots, Quality Metal and 4 blueprint points per piece.
What is the best early warm clothing?
The Insulated Mountain set (46 insulation per piece) costs only Cloth and Processed Plastic at a Tailoring Bench, and its blueprints cost 0 points. The animal hats (Bear, Fox, Wolf Head Hat) give 35 for 4 Cloth plus pelts.
How do I raise Body Warmth quickly?
Stand by a Campfire or brazier, wear a Chemical or Electric Heater, and drink Improvised Tea or Improvised Coffee (+45 Body Warmth each). A Warming Dish from a Stove restores up to 60.
Does alcohol help against the cold?
Vodka and Moonshine restore 20 Body Warmth but cause Drunk, which disrupts temperature regulation. Methyl Alcohol removes 30 warmth and 20 insulation. Use alcohol to cure Parasites or an Infected Wound instead.
What does Hypothermia do in Permafrost?
Hypothermia deals damage based on the temperature difference and makes you drowsy and disoriented. It ends when you regenerate Body Warmth at a heat source.
