How to get Aggressive Reconnaissance
Game dataIn-game condition: “Complete the Unheard Farewell quest.”
Aggressive Reconnaissance unlocks when you complete An Unheard Farewell in the Valley of Ashes, the second region, so most players meet this quest early. An adjudant hides in a wagon while his unit has gone into a cave, and he wants to know what happened to them.
When he first speaks to you, choose Help: it is the option that sets the quest's flag in the dialogue data, while Refuse sets nothing. Follow the unit's trail into the cave, then go back and decide whether to tell him the truth. The Letter to all Commanding Officers of the Line Infantry, near The Climb Lantern, holds the orders the journal mentions.
Both endings complete the quest, but the reward differs: one branch pays the Lucky Shot Amber, the other Sleight of Hand, and Sleight of Hand has no other source in the game, which matters for Ambersmith.
