William Dowsett is you: a volunteer of Napoleon's Foreign Legion whose enlistment oath, dated 19 February 1817, opens his journal. He wakes among the dead on the Battlefield with no memory, and the plague altars grant him fire and then the power over motion.
He leans on James, who says they fought together, the physician Louis and the riddling Lucjan Skawiński, while the Shrike's voice draws him on. The trail from the sealed Egyptian door in the Caverns runs through the University to a relic in the Fortress tower — where he is captured and held in Napoleon's prison as a traitor, until the Shrike, revealed as Maria Walewska, cuts him free.
His last fight is against a foe wearing his own face; afterwards he writes that the doubt that followed him all along is finally gone.
