At the camp I encountered a jovial fellow named James, who claims that we were friends during the war. If this is indeed the case, then I must count myself fortunate. James is a skilled gunsmith and appears to be a good soul. His hearty laughter is one of the few things that brings a measure of light to the gloom that hangs over this place.

I cannot help but feel that this war has begun to weigh heavily upon James. He has changed of late; grown more sombre, and he laughs far less than he once did. In its place, he has taken to drink rather freely. I confess I am concerned for him.

James Stewart is the jovial gunsmith William meets at the end of Chapter II, who says they were friends during the war. His Iron Bench stands at the Abandoned Church hub and again in Entropy, with new stock after Chapters V and IX.

As the war drags on he grows sombre and starts drinking heavily. By the time William returns to the camp after his capture, James has left — Lucjan says to recover what little remains of his dignity.
