Placement rules
The game checks one thing before it lets Sign go down, and it tells you none of them — it just refuses and turns the ghost red.

How to build Sign
What do you need to build Sign in Valheim?
Wood ×2, Coal ×1. Materials have to be inside the build radius of the station, not just in your inventory, which is the usual reason a piece stays greyed out with everything apparently to hand.
Why will Sign not place in Valheim?
Because of the rule listed above. The game gives no reason when a ghost turns red; it is always one of those, and the surface is the usual culprit.
How much health does Sign have?
100. That is structural health, separate from any durability an item has — it is what a raid, a fire or your own hammer has to chew through.
Does Sign decay or need a roof?
It is worn down by rain, fire, ash rain, snow. A piece under a roof and connected to the ground through supporting pieces keeps its full health; one left exposed loses health until it breaks.
Where is Sign in the build menu?
Under Furniture, on -. Build pieces are unlocked by picking up their materials rather than by finding a plan, so if it is missing from your hammer the answer is always a resource you have not carried home yet.
Does Sign hold up a structure in Valheim?
It does — this piece carries support, so anything attached to it inherits a share of what it has. That share shrinks with every connection and shrinks faster sideways than upwards, which is why a long horizontal run fails where the same number of pieces stacked vertically would not.
