Taming & Breeding

The 11 tameable creatures in Valheim with what each one eats, how long taming takes and whether it can be commanded. 7 of them will also breed, which is what turns a single tame into a supply. Taming food comes from the creature behaviour data rather than the tame component, which is why a guide built from one alone tends to miss it.

Valheim has 11 tameable creatures, 7 of which can be bred. Taming food is not stored on the taming component at all. It lives on the creature’s AI, which is why many guides list the times but not what to feed.

Valheim Taming FAQ

Which creatures can be tamed in Valheim?

11 creatures can be tamed: Boar, Wolf, Lox, Asksvin, Moose, Hen, Skelett, spiritcaller_bjorn, spiritcaller_boar, spiritcaller_moose, spiritcaller_wolf. Of those, 7 can also be bred once a pair is tame and fed.

How long does taming take in Valheim?

Exactly 30 minutes, for every tameable creature in the game. There is no faster animal: the taming time is identical across all 11 of them, and what differs is only the food each one accepts.

Why has my breeding stopped?

Because the pen hit its ceiling. Each animal has a population limit inside the check radius — between 4 and 10 depending on the species — and once that many are nearby, no new pregnancy starts. Move the surplus somewhere else, or butcher it, and breeding resumes on its own.

Which animals lay eggs instead of young?

Asksvin, Hen. Breeding those does not give you another animal — it gives you an item you then have to hatch, which is a separate step and easy to miss if you are waiting for a calf to appear.

How long does taming take in Valheim?

From 30 min at the quickest to 30 min at the slowest, and only while the animal is fed and you are not too close. Taming progress is paused, not lost, if you walk away — so the practical trick is to drop food, build a fence and leave.

Do tamed animals stay tamed?

Yes. Taming is permanent once the bar fills; what you can lose is the animal itself, to a raid, a drop, or a wolf that got in. 1 of the tameable species can also be told to follow or stay, which is the difference between a pet and livestock.
