By raw armour value at maximum quality it is Breastplate of the Protector at 50. Set bonuses and movement penalties matter too, so the heaviest set is not automatically the right one.

Each piece has a per-level armour bonus applied at every quality step. Both the base and maximum values are in the table so the gain is visible without doing the arithmetic.

In two different ways, depending on the size of the hit. If your armour is less than half the incoming damage, it is simply subtracted: a 500 hit against a full 200 armour leaves 300. Above that threshold the game switches to a curve, and the same 200 armour turns a 100 hit into 13. That is one formula, not a rating, and it explains why heavy armour feels excellent against a crowd and thin against one enormous blow.

Yes, but it never reaches immunity. The curve is damage squared divided by four times your armour, so it approaches zero without arriving: there is no armour value in the game that makes a hit harmless. Where armour pays best is against repeated small hits, because each of those falls into the curve; a single hit larger than twice your armour is only ever reduced point for point.

Four that carry an armour value — head, chest, legs and shoulders — plus a cape slot that mostly does not. The pieces listed here, 113 of them, are added together into the single number the formula uses, which is why a strong chest with nothing on the legs performs far worse than the piece alone suggests.
