Biomes

All 9 Valheim biomes with the creatures that spawn there, the resources that generate there and the structures worth finding. 8 of them sit behind a boss kill. Worlds are built from a seed, so there are no map coordinates to give, but what belongs to each biome never changes.

Meadows

Open grass and the only ground in Valheim that is not actively trying to kill you. Everything you build first goes here, and the reason to leave is copper.

Step1

Black Forest

Dark enough that you will not see what is following you. It holds the copper and tin that end the stone age, and Greydwarves arrive in threes.

Step2

Swamp

Wet, poisonous and permanently dark, with iron locked inside crypts that need a key. The biome that teaches you to bring poison resistance rather than more armour.

Step3

Mountain

Cold enough to kill you on its own, before anything with teeth reaches you. Silver is under the snow and wolves hunt in packs across it.

Step4

Plains

Deceptively open. Fulings travel in war parties, deathsquitos cross a field faster than you can turn, and the black metal is worth both.

Step5

Mistlands

A fog you cannot see through, over terrain that drops away without warning. Bring a wisp light, and expect the Seekers to find you first.

Step6

Ashlands

Lava, ash and a coastline that shoots back. Everything here is on fire or about to be, and the gear that survives it is made from what does.

Step7

Deep North

The last biome and the newest: Valheim 1.0 filled it in with Kall Fimbulbringer, a three-phase fight worth 47,000 health, and gave it a building set, armour and food of its own. The only altar that asks for no offering, and the only boss that grants no Forsaken power.

Step8

Ocean

The space between everything else, and the reason to build a longship. Serpents surface in storms, and drowning is a real cause of death here.

Step–

Valheim has 9 biomes, 8 of them gated behind a boss. Each biome is a difficulty step rather than just a backdrop: it decides what spawns, what generates and what gear you need before going in.

Valheim Biomes FAQ

How many biomes are there in Valheim?

There are 9, of which 8 sit behind a boss. The Ocean is crossed rather than cleared, and the Deep North is still unfinished in the live build.

What order should I visit Valheim biomes in?

Meadows first, then Black Forest, Swamp, Mountain, Plains, Mistlands and Ashlands. The order is enforced by materials: each biome’s gear is what makes the next one survivable.

What order should you visit Valheim biomes in?

The order their bosses are gated in, because each boss drop is what the next biome assumes you own. 8 of the 9 biomes hold a boss; the rest are crossed rather than cleared.

Can you skip a biome in Valheim?

Physically, yes — nothing stops you sailing anywhere on day one. Practically, only one step is a hard gate: without the Swamp Key there are no Sunken Crypts, and without those there is no iron.

Which Valheim biome is the most dangerous?

For a first run, the Swamp — its damage is small, constant, comes from under the water and stacks poison on top. Later biomes hit harder but announce themselves; the Swamp is where most players lose a full set of gear.
