A placement count is a floor: random drops from regular enemies add more of the lower tiers.
Ferrofluid Flask upgrades
Game dataFerrofluid Flask Power Upgrades raise each dose from 50 to 140 Health over 9 levels, 24 upgrades in total. Empty Ferrofluid Flasks add charges: you start with 3 and the upgrade track adds 9. Both are used at a Lantern.

Potency values and per-level costs come from the game's healing flask config.
Where to buy upgrade materials
Game dataJames's Iron Bench sells blade and firearm materials, Louis's Laboratoire sells Transmutation materials and flask upgrades. Neither sells Tier 4.
Weapon progression in Valor Mortis runs entirely on materials: every blade and firearm costs the same 16 materials to max, every Transmutation 7. The lower tiers are generous, with more placed than every weapon needs, while Tier 4 is placed only a few times per class. Flask upgrades sit in the same menu at the Lantern and are the other long-term sink: 24 Power Upgrades take a dose from 50 to 140 Health.

Valor Mortis upgrade materials FAQ
What are the upgrade material tiers in Valor Mortis?
Every weapon class has four tiers. For blades and firearms, Tier 1 pays for weapon levels 2–4, Tier 2 for 5–7, Tier 3 for 8–9 and Tier 4 for level 10. Transmutations use one tier per level from 2 to 5.
How many materials does it take to max a weapon?
A blade or firearm needs 6 Tier 1, 6 Tier 2, 3 Tier 3 and 1 Tier 4 material to go from level 1 to 10. A Transmutation needs 2 each of Tiers 1–3 and 1 Tier 4 to reach level 5.
Can you max every weapon in Valor Mortis?
Not with world pickups alone. The placed copies of Masterwork Firearm Parts, Quintessential Transmutation Material fall short of one per weapon in their class, and merchants don't sell Tier 4, so one weapon of that class stays a level below max.
Can you buy upgrade materials?
Yes, the lower tiers. James's Iron Bench sells Tier 1 blade and firearm materials from the start, Tier 2 after Chapter 5 and Tier 3 after Chapter 9, in small stock. Louis's Laboratoire does the same for Transmutation materials, with Tier 1 Transmutation material in unlimited stock after Chapter 5.
How do you upgrade the Ferrofluid Flask?
Use a Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrade at a Lantern to raise healing per dose (50 up to 140 Health, 24 upgrades in total), and an Empty Ferrofluid Flask to add a charge. Louis's Laboratoire sells both in small stock.
Where can you farm upgrade materials?
Regular enemies have small drop chances on low-tier materials: Eternal Guardsmen drop Crude Blade Material and Standard Firearm Parts at 3% each, and Abominations drop Pure Transmutation Material at 2%. Resting at a Lantern revives non-boss enemies, so a short loop near a Lantern repeats those chances.
