How to beat Risen Grenadier
Game dataCounterplay for Risen Grenadier, written from its move list, resistances, variants and drops.
Grenadiers are slow (3 m/s) but sturdy for a regular enemy: 500 HP and 400 posture at level 1, up to 1,500 HP at level 6. Both jumping attacks (Melee Jump and Fury Jump, 35 each) are red; everything else, even their 10-damage grab, can be blocked for 45 Endurance or parried.
They never block, and a backstab deals 250 at level 1, half a Grenadier's health, so a sneak attack is worth setting up. The head takes 1.5x damage while one armoured zone takes only 0.2x, and Stasis has no resistance (4 segments).
Kill them for grenades: 30% of Grenadiers drop a Hand Grenade (100 to 200 damage in a 4 m blast), by far the best drop rate of any enemy. The elite variant has only 400 HP but is 99% resistant to Fire and Ignite.
How to fight Risen Grenadier
Game dataTips built from its data: what it resists, what it is weak to, which attacks to dodge and how to open it up.
- Watch for the red attacks: Melee Jump, Melee Fury Jump cannot be blocked, so dodge them instead of holding block.
- Its head takes ×1.5 damage, so aim firearm shots at the head.
- It never blocks, so a full light-attack chain always lands.
- Sneak up on it: a backstab deals a fixed 250 damage at level 1, 50% of its health (2 backstabs to kill).
- It has a grab, and grabs cannot be blocked: step back when it lunges.
Risen Grenadier variants
Game dataThe game defines 2 versions of this enemy. Each has its own health, posture and defensive behaviour; elites are tougher one-off placements, summoned ones appear mid-fight.
| Variant | Role | Health (lowest → highest level) | Catalysts | Posture | Stasis segments | Block chance | Parry chance | Backstab | Placed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1* | Regular | 500 → 1,500 | 150 | 400 | 4 | No | — | Yes | 23 |
| Elite* | Elite | 400 → 680 | 3,000 | 400 | 4 | No | — | No | 1 |
* Variant names are built from the game's internal tier tags (the game shows no name for them). Block and parry chances are listed in the order the game stores them. Placed = how many level spawners use that variant.
Health of every variant by level
| Variant | Lv 1 | Lv 2 | Lv 3 | Lv 4 | Lv 5 | Lv 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1* | 500 | 700 | 900 | 1,100 | 1,300 | 1,500 |
| Elite* | 400 | 560 | 680 | — | — | — |
Speed and posture by variant
Game dataHow fast each variant closes the distance, and how quickly its posture comes back once you stop pressuring it.
Its fastest variant moves at 3 m/s; your walk speed is 4 m/s.
| Variant | Role | Move speed | Sprint | Posture recovery | Recovery delay |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1* | Regular | 3 m/s | — | — | 2 s |
| Elite* | Elite | 3 m/s | — | — | 2 s |
Speeds are the AI's movement settings in metres per second. Posture recovery is the posture regained per second, and the delay is the wait before recovery begins (game fields posture_recovery_per_sec and posture_reset_delay). — = not set for that variant.
Risen Grenadier level scaling
Game dataEnemy levels in Valor Mortis are set per placement, not by a difficulty setting (the game has a single difficulty): the same enemy is level 1 in one spot and level 6 in another, usually higher later in the campaign. This is the main variant from level 1 to 6.
| Level | Health | Catalysts | Damage dealt | Critical attack damage taken | Backstab damage taken | Backstab share of HP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lv 1 | 500 | 150 | ×1 | 250 | 250 | 50% |
| Lv 2 | 700 | 225 | ×1.2 | 350 | 350 | 50% |
| Lv 3 | 900 | 300 | ×1.4 | 450 | 450 | 50% |
| Lv 4 | 1,100 | 375 | ×1.6 | 550 | 550 | 50% |
| Lv 5 | 1,300 | 450 | ×1.8 | 650 | 650 | 50% |
| Lv 6 | 1,500 | 525 | ×2 | 750 | 750 | 50% |
Damage dealt multiplies every attack's base damage. Critical attacks (after a posture break) and backstabs deal the fixed amounts shown, whatever your weapon; the share column is our arithmetic.

SpoilerShow the journal entry
An abomination created from bodies horribly mangled and fused into a single mass of flesh and bone. Its limbs protrude at unnatural angles, twisting through torsos that are not their own. Despite being so disfigured, the creature moves with disturbing coordination. Grenades are thrown great distances from a rusted bucket held at its centre, while fused arms deliver crushing blows with unnatural force.
Risen Grenadier is the #12 most common of the 15 enemy types, with 24 placements across 10 regions; you meet it first in The Battlefield and see it most in Valley of Ashes. Of its 7 attacks, 2 are unblockable (Melee Jump, Melee Fury Jump), and the hardest hitter is Melee Regular at 40 base damage. No damage type does extra damage to it, so pick a weapon you like. None of its placements carry a scripted Amber or key. Its health runs from 500 at level 1 to 1,500 at level 6, paying 150 Catalysts to 525 Catalysts.
