How to beat Risen Musketeer

Game data

Counterplay for Risen Musketeer, written from its move list, resistances, variants and drops.

Risen Musketeers are everywhere (143 spawners in 10 regions, 24 in the Valley of Ashes alone) but they are the frailest soldiers: 70 HP at level 1, 210 at level 6, and no posture bar at all. A backstab kills one outright at every level, and their head takes double damage, so a Musket headshot (300) kills one at any placement level.

They walk at only 1.12 m/s and one variant never moves (Stationary), so close the distance and finish them in melee. Up close they only have a 30-damage charge and a 20-damage stab, both blockable for 35 Endurance.

Musketeers are the only enemy that drops Pistol Cartridges (4%), plus Standard Firearm Parts 2% of the time, so they are worth clearing when the Pistol runs dry.

How to fight Risen Musketeer

Game data

Tips built from its data: what it resists, what it is weak to, which attacks to dodge and how to open it up.

  • None of its 2 attacks are flagged unblockable, so a raised guard or a parry handles everything it throws.
  • Its head takes ×2 damage, so aim firearm shots at the head.
  • It never blocks, so a full light-attack chain always lands.
  • Sneak up on it: a backstab deals a fixed 70 damage at level 1, 100% of its health (1 backstab kills it).

Risen Musketeer variants

Game data

The game defines 2 versions of this enemy. Each has its own health, posture and defensive behaviour; elites are tougher one-off placements, summoned ones appear mid-fight.

Risen Musketeer level scaling

Game data

Enemy levels in Valor Mortis are set per placement, not by a difficulty setting (the game has a single difficulty): the same enemy is level 1 in one spot and level 6 in another, usually higher later in the campaign. This is the main variant from level 1 to 6.

Damage dealt multiplies every attack's base damage. Critical attacks (after a posture break) and backstabs deal the fixed amounts shown, whatever your weapon; the share column is our arithmetic.

'Apprêtez armes! En joue! Feu!' Even if my memory is murky, these words still echo in my head as though Napoleon himself were shouting them directly into my ear. Do these men hear them as well? Is that why they remain capable of loading and discharging their muskets with deadly precision? Why, then, are the rest of their movements so disorganised and sluggish?

They are not just wicked, filled with hatred or blind rage. They are stuck here, just like me, but with less free will. Why? How could they have deserved this? Perhaps God has chosen to make Earth his purgatory...

Risen Musketeer is the #3 most common of the 15 enemy types, with 143 placements across 10 regions; you meet it first in The Battlefield and see it most in Valley of Ashes. None of its placements carry a scripted Amber or key. Its health runs from 70 at level 1 to 210 at level 6, paying 50 Catalysts to 200 Catalysts.
