Chapter route, step by step

Calculated

Our recommended order through The Battlefield, Lantern by Lantern: what sits near each one, where the side quests start and how to prepare for the boss. Distances are straight-line metres from the map data.

  1. Follow the tricolour banner from where you wake and light Onslaught Arch (#101), the region's first Lantern. The game files name it after the flamethrower shrine: the altar that gives you the power of fire (journal step 2) is one of the two ability altars around it.
  2. Sweep the Onslaught Arch area before moving on — four Amber chests are assigned to it: Bottomless Well and Life Diverted (about 94 m out) and Dilated Moment and Duellist's Focus (about 151 m). The Eternal Guard's Order (269 m) and the Fencer's Journal (154 m) are out here too; they set up Guard Eternal.
  3. Rest at Trenches (#102). An Empty Ferrofluid Flask lies about 6 m from the Lantern — use it at a Lantern for an extra Ferrofluid Flask. Three more Amber chests are close: Volatile End (34 m), Transmuted Persistence (45 m) and Wound that Heals (77 m), plus a Superior Firearm Parts chest (34 m).
  4. Light Field Encampment (#103). Its internal name is the 'commander first encounter' Lantern, so treat it as the boss checkpoint, and grab the last two Amber chests — Iron Grip and Butcher's Carnage, both about 80 m away — before you engage.
  5. Fight General Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer, about 71 m from Field Encampment: 1,800 Health, 500 Posture, and 9 of his 18 attacks are unblockable, so dodge the red ones instead of blocking. He takes 40% extra fire damage and double damage to the head — lead with your new fire power. He pays 10,000 Catalysts and the Torn Banner achievement.

Tips & missables

All nine Battlefield Ambers come from chests — no enemy drops or quest rewards — so a full sweep of the three Lantern areas collects every one before Chapter II.

Guard Eternal stalls at a blocked path in its second journal entry. If you can't clear it yet, keep going: The Battlefield keeps fast travel, so nothing here is missable.

Lothaire resists Ignite build-up by 30% even though fire damage hurts him more, so count on the raw fire damage rather than a quick burn.

SpoilerShow all 3 journal steps
  1. 1

I awoke amidst the dead on the battlefield, my mind a blank as to how I came to be here. Around me lies only death, the stench and silence pressing in like a nightmare. What is this madness? The sole thing I can recall is the tricoloured banner of the empire, fluttering faintly in the wind — it shall guide my path through this horror.

  2. 2

Travelling forward, I came across a strange altar of sorts, at the centre of which lay some poor creature, almost completely consumed by the plague. His touch... changed me, gave me the power of fire. I don't know what to make of all this, but the power of fire will certainly come in handy in this nightmarish reality within which I find myself.

  3. 3
    Final entry

As I march through these shattered ruins, I cannot help but question the very purpose of this war. Where have the common soldiers gone, those men with whom I once shared bread and powder? What foul providence has loosed this red plague upon the land, that it should stain everything within my sight? And why is it that I alone stand with my mind intact? Or perhaps this is just another lie I tell myself...
