Chapter route, step by step

Calculated

Our recommended order through Napoleon's Prison, Lantern by Lantern: what sits near each one, where the side quests start and how to prepare for the boss. Distances are straight-line metres from the map data.

No fast travel: Napoleon's Prison has no fast travel. Once you move on, you can't come back — finish its side quests, letters and chests first.

  1. Napoleon's Prison has no fast travel: its two Lanterns, Prison (#1101) and Burning City (#1102), only let you rest. Light Prison first.
  2. Recover your gear: the Armoury Key is 24 m from the Prison Lantern, and the Equipment Note (42 m) says the prisoners' equipment is under guard.
  3. The Forgotten Fortune: the Prisoner's Note (21 m) asks someone to burn the hanged man's corpse. Do it to find the Silver Lockpick, then open the locked cell.
  4. The Choir: read both parts of the Prison Warden's Journal (24–29 m), take the Key to the Chapel (29 m) and post the list of dead prisoners on the boulevard's bulletin board. It pays a Remnant's Return and 6,000 Catalysts — the largest Catalyst reward of any side quest.
  5. If your Mice friendship is 10 or more, the Mice help you here: 14 prison conversations check it, and one of them gives 3 Special Cartridges. A mouse hole sits about 103 m from Burning City.
  6. Rest at Burning City (#1102) — the Exquisite Firearm Parts chest 85 m away is trapped — then continue to Entropy, the final region.
  7. Entropy has no fast travel either, but James's Iron Bench and Louis's Laboratoire are both there. With 10+ Mice friendship the Mouse King gives you the Giant Whisker Gift (30,000 Catalysts) and the Mice's Key, which opens a safe shortcut through the nightmare realm. The final boss, Entity, Voice of the Void, has 5,000 Health, 700 Posture and 6 of 19 attacks unblockable, and resists Ignite build-up by 60%; it pays 100,000 Catalysts and In His Own Image.

Tips & missables

Everything in Napoleon's Prison is missable in practice: there's no fast travel back once you move on. Its letters, 4 chests and both side quests should be done before you leave the Burning City Lantern.

The Mice checks here only read your running total — at least 10 of the 22 points from The Outskirts and the City of Orphans. You can't earn new points in the prison.

The game files contain one ending sequence; the choices in the final conversation change dialogue, not the outcome.

SpoilerShow all 2 journal steps
  1. 1

What I found at the camp weighs heavy on my heart. This might be the worst state I could have found myself in before a venturing into that damn cave.

  2. 2
    Final entry

The final foe has fallen. The face that stared back at me across the blade was my own, as though I had been forced to duel the darkest corners of my own soul. Every strike I dealt felt as if it were meant not for flesh, but for the fear that had long ruled my heart. When he fell, it was not merely an enemy that perished, but the doubt that had followed me through every step of this journey. I feel changed, as though some shadow within me has finally been driven into the light. The silence after the battle is strange, almost peaceful, and for the first time in many days, I can breathe freely.
