Chapter route, step by step

Calculated

Our recommended order through Fortress, Lantern by Lantern: what sits near each one, where the side quests start and how to prepare for the boss. Distances are straight-line metres from the map data.

Point of no return ahead: The next region, Napoleon's Prison, has no fast travel. Before you leave, finish everything you want here and in earlier regions — above all, the Mice friendship (at least 10 points).

  1. Light Main Gate (#1001, internally 'Entrance'). The Curfew Notice (19 m) starts Two Towers: light the pyres to open the gate. The Lucky Shot chest is 29 m away, with a Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrade at 61 m.
  2. Rest at Traverse (#1002): Life Diverted (69 m), a Quintessential Transmutation Material chest (37 m) and another Flask Power Upgrade (33 m).
  3. Light Chapel (#1003): Indestructible Shell is in a chest 29 m from the Lantern.
  4. Ramparts (#1004) is the loot and trap hotspot: the Fortress Armory Key (67 m) and Captain's Key (130 m), two Flask Power Upgrades (23 m and 45 m), and three trapped chests — Potent Concoction (43 m), Quintessential Blade Material (58 m) and Tomorrow's Promise (114 m).
  5. Light Courtyard (#1005). The Codex of the Oathbound (93 m) is here — The Oathbound ends in the castle's hidden chamber, so bring all seven emblems — along with a Remnant's Return chest (104 m) and an Empty Ferrofluid Flask chest (98 m).
  6. Only when everything else is done, climb to High Tower (#1006, internally 'PreNephtis'). Captain Raphael of the Nephtis Superioris is about 36 m away: 4,000 Health, the biggest Posture bar of any boss (2,000), 3 of 10 attacks unblockable, 30% ranged resistance and a double-damage head. He pays 50,000 Catalysts and Behemoth.

Tips & missables

Treat the High Tower as the point of no return. The capture at the castle tower (this chapter's first journal entry) sends the story to Napoleon's Prison and then Entropy, and neither has fast travel. Before you climb, finish The Oathbound (We Wear the Same Colours, about 0.2% of players), light the castle bonfire for Frenzied Flame, and make sure your Mice friendship is at 10 or more.

The Fortress is the setting of Chapter IX's journal (the castle ruins and the relic); this chapter's own entries begin in Napoleon's Prison.

Fire Breathing only drops from an elite Remnant of the Iron Regiment in the Fortress — it has no other source.

SpoilerShow all 4 journal steps
  1. 1

I awoke on the cold prison floor as the memories came rushing back. The relic in the tower. The suffocating air of Napoleon's tent. His speech... and then, the dark. It is time to face the facts. My capture at the castle tower means I have been sold out. There were only two people who could have betrayed me, and I trusted them both with my life. But my saviour wasn't either of them. It was Maria Walewska — Napoleon's trusted confidante, and the true identity of... the Shrike. She has been playing a dangerous double game, leading the rebellion right under the Emperor's nose. Now, she has cut my binds and asked for my help to save the world. Will our success mean Bonaparte's downfall? I suppose I will find out.

  2. 2

This prison is a deadly maze. I need to find my gear if I wish to live through the night.

  3. 3

Now that I have my weapons back, I need to find a way out.

  4. 4
    Final entry

I must return to the camp, though dread weighs upon me at the thought of what I may find there. One question beats relentlessly within my mind: who among my companions has betrayed me, and how shall I confront them for such duplicity?
