How to beat Risen Lancer

Game data

Counterplay for Risen Lancer, written from its move list, resistances, variants and drops.

Lancers always block: the game stores a 100% block chance for every variant, and their left hand takes only 10% damage. Go around the guard instead of through it. Their head takes 3x damage, the highest head multiplier of any enemy, so a Pistol headshot deals 90 at level 1 and a Musket headshot (450) kills a Lancer up to level 4 (408 HP).

At 1.75 m/s they are among the slowest enemies, so you can keep your distance and shoot. Their Melee Spin (40) is red and counts as a grab; every other move hits for 10 to 22 and costs only 24 Endurance to block. A backstab kills a regular Lancer outright at every level.

The elite Lancer in City of Orphans has 2,000 posture, so do not try to break it; it drops the Bottomless Well Amber. Regular Lancers drop a Protective Vial 3% of the time.

How to fight Risen Lancer

Game data

Tips built from its data: what it resists, what it is weak to, which attacks to dodge and how to open it up.

  • Watch for the red attacks: Melee Spin cannot be blocked, so dodge them instead of holding block.
  • Its head takes ×3 damage, so aim firearm shots at the head.
  • It can block and parry your attacks (block chance 100%, parry chance — as the game lists them), so mix in charged attacks and posture damage instead of mashing light attacks.
  • Sneak up on it: a backstab deals a fixed 170 damage at level 1, 100% of its health (1 backstab kills it).
  • It has a grab, and grabs cannot be blocked: step back when it lunges.
  • Its toughest variant, Elite*, starts at 400 HP, far more than the 170 of a level-1 placement.

Risen Lancer variants

The game defines 3 versions of this enemy. Each has its own health, posture and defensive behaviour; elites are tougher one-off placements, summoned ones appear mid-fight.

Risen Lancer level scaling

Game data

Enemy levels in Valor Mortis are set per placement, not by a difficulty setting (the game has a single difficulty): the same enemy is level 1 in one spot and level 6 in another, usually higher later in the campaign. This is the main variant from level 1 to 6.

These wretches wear the garb of a horseman, and yet they are grounded by a massive appendage, which they use as a shield of sorts. Still, they charge as though thousands of thundering hooves ring in their ears.

I cannot help but wonder where their horses have gone. I have seen their carcasses scattered across the fields, swollen and still, yet the riders continue as if nothing has been lost. Do they not notice the absence, or has the plague simply erased the memory of their beloved animals?

Risen Lancer is the #10 most common of the 15 enemy types, with 29 placements across 10 regions; you meet it first in The Battlefield and see it most in Vale of Wrath. Of its 7 attacks, 1 is unblockable (Melee Spin), and the hardest hitter is Melee Spin at 40 base damage. No damage type does extra damage to it, so pick a weapon you like. Hunt its elite placements for Bottomless Well (City of Orphans). Its health runs from 170 at level 1 to 680 at level 6, paying 150 Catalysts to 275 Catalysts.
