Stasis is offence and the Shield is defence. Stasis freezes from 8 m and turns a full freeze into break damage (550 on a 5-segment boss); the Shield holds a barrier while you keep Aim held, fully blocks attacks at a Nephtoglobin cost, and on release fires a wave whose damage scales with what you blocked.

The Shield's trump card is level 4: Impenetrable Defence protects from Unblockable Attacks, the only way in the game to stop red attacks without dodging, and the barrier also protects from Infestation effects. Shield Bash at level 5 adds a 20-damage, 100-posture bash for 40 Nephtoglobin.

The catch is timing: the Shield comes from the University (region 9), so it only matters for the Orphan, Captain Raphael and Entity, while Stasis arrives in the Caverns (region 4) and pays off on six bosses.
