How to beat Sphinx
Strategy built from the boss's data: which attacks to dodge, what it is weak to and how to open it up.
The Sphinx fights in two forms, masked and unmasked, and almost every claw and tail strike builds Crystallization on you, so do not trade hits while the meter is high. Combo 3, Combo 4, the Leap, Vanish and the posture-break slam are unblockable; everything else can be blocked.
It has no elemental weaknesses, and its armoured parts take only 30 to 80% damage, so hit the exposed body. Its posture pool is the smallest of any boss (350), so aggressive parries and charged attacks open it up for critical attacks quickly. The nearest Lantern, Ancient Lair, is a long run of almost 370 m, so bring spare flasks rather than relying on retries.
- Watch for the red attacks: Combo 4, Combo 3, Boss Posture Break, Vanish cannot be blocked, so dodge them instead of holding block.
- Its posture pool is 350. Break it with heavy and parried hits, then land a critical attack for a fixed 300 damage (15% of its HP).
- Some attacks build up Crystallization on you; back off and let the meter drain before trading hits.
- The nearest Lantern is Ancient Lair, about 368 m from the fight, where you respawn after a death.

- 350 → 300
The Sphinx has no resistances at all; its armour does the job instead, with body zones that take only 30% and 80% damage next to one that takes full damage, so always hit the exposed part. Its 350 posture pool is the smallest of any boss and opens a 300-damage critical attack, so posture is the fast route: parry its blockable strikes (0.2 s window), and with the Rapier (150 posture per perfect parry) three perfect parries are enough on their own.
Almost every claw and tail attack builds Crystallization on you, so do not trade blows while your meter is high. On your side, Stasis is excellent: the Stasis Transmutation from the Caverns, this boss's region, fills its 5 segments with no resistance, and a full freeze breaks for 550 damage by the game's break table. A Flaming Whetstone also works, since it has no Ignite resistance.
Hits to kill: 100 Saber light hits at level 1 or 50 at level 5; the Blunderbuss needs 14 point-blank shots at level 1. Ambers: Duellist's Focus for the parries, Dominatus to turn each posture break into Health, Perfectionism while you stay untouched. Avoid Lunatic's Grasp: it lowers your own Stasis resistance.
Sphinx attacks and moves
Game dataEvery attack Sphinx uses, grouped into combos, with damage per hit and whether you can block it.
Masked (3 attacks)
Unmasked (4 attacks)
Used in any phase (9 attacks)
Damage is the base value per hit (bosses always fight at level 1, so no level scaling applies). Move names marked * come from the game's internal tags, because the game never shows attack names.
Sphinx's attack strings
Game dataThe combos Sphinx's AI chains together in each phase, hit by hit with damage. Red hits cannot be blocked or parried.
Masked: 3 strings
| # | String | Total damage | Red hits | AI cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tail Attack · 30 | 30 | — | 1 |
| 2 | Melee HHV · 30 | 30 | — | 1 |
| 3 | Combo 3 A · 30Combo 3 B · 40 | 70 | 1 | 1 |
Unmasked: 4 strings
| # | String | Total damage | Red hits | AI cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| 3 | Melee HHV · 30 | 30 | — | 1 |
| 4 | Combo 3 A · 30Combo 3 B · 40 | 70 | 1 | 1 |
Damage is per hit before the placement level's multiplier. AI cost is the string's stamina_cost in the boss's behaviour data: the boss's own budget, not your Endurance. Move names are built from the game's ability tags (English only).
Weaknesses and resistances
Game dataSphinx has no damage-type weaknesses or resistances: every weapon deals its full damage.
Red = takes extra damage of that type; filled to the right = resists it (100% = immune).

Sphinx's phases
Game dataWhen each phase starts and what changes: the posture pool and the resistances each phase record sets.
| Phase | Starts | Posture | Resistance changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Masked | Fight start | 350 | Same as base |
| Unmasked | Scripted transition | 350 | Same as base |
HP thresholds are shown only where the phase record holds an absolute health value below the boss's maximum; other phases change on a scripted trigger, so no number is printed. Resistance changes compare the phase record's overrides with the base profile in the Resistances section.

Journal entry
Game dataSpoilerRead William's journal entry on Sphinx
The Sphinx appears wholly alien to this world. Its presence carries a power beyond human understanding, ancient and immeasurable. How such a being came into existence remains unclear, yet it serves as proof that the plague is capable of creation beyond mere corruption.
When one looks at this beast, it is clear that the plague does not simply destroy — it creates. Terrible things, certainly, but also magnificent ones. The Sphinx stands as evidence that the force behind this calamity may possess ambitions far greater than mankind realises.
Sphinx, Devourer of the Unworthy is the boss of Caverns and boss number 3 of 10 in the campaign, with 2,000 HP. Of its 14 attacks, 5 are unblockable (Combo 4, Combo 3, Boss Posture Break, Vanish); the hardest single hit is Combo 4 for 50. No damage type gets a bonus against it. Beating it pays 20,000 Catalysts.
