How to beat The Iron Marshall

Strategy built from the boss's data: which attacks to dodge, what it is weak to and how to open it up.

The Iron Marshall is a pure melee bruiser with only eight moves, but they hit harder than anything before him: Rush for 80, Uppercut, Double Swing and Backhand for 70. Only the Upperbash (90 damage) is unblockable, so a raised guard handles most of the fight and the Upperbash is the one move you must dodge.

He has no weak points and no elemental weakness, and he shrugs off 30% of explosive damage, so plain melee and upgraded firearms are the way through his 2,400 HP. Break his 800 posture for a 500-damage critical attack. Stasis works on him: filling all six segments in one go unlocks the Statue of Insanity achievement.

  • Watch for the red attacks: Upperbash cannot be blocked, so dodge them instead of holding block.
  • Avoid relying on Ignite build-up; it resists that damage type.
  • Its posture pool is 800. Break it with heavy and parried hits, then land a critical attack for a fixed 500 damage (21% of its HP).
  • The nearest Lantern is Orchard, about 47 m from the fight, where you respawn after a death.

The Iron Marshall resists firearms by only 10% and explosives by 30%, and has no weak points and no elemental weakness, so this is a melee check. Take the Saber: it can block and parry, and only one of his eight moves is red. Blocking is expensive, though: each of his blockable hits costs 60 Endurance to block out of your 80, so a perfect parry (no Endurance, 100 posture with the Saber) is worth far more than a raised guard.

His 800 posture guards a 500-damage critical attack. Mighty Rounds turn the Pistol into a posture tool (8x posture damage plus 25 flat per round, at half damage), and the Blunderbuss from this same region kills him in 18 point-blank shots at level 1, against 120 Saber light hits. Fire is a poor pick: no fire weakness and 50% Ignite build-up resistance.

The Upperbash (90) is his only red attack and his hardest hit, so Glass Soldier's extra damage taken is a gamble here. Perfectionism (+10 to 20% melee damage at full Health) and Duellist's Focus suit a parry-first plan.
