Valheim never tells you where to go next. It gives you a stone circle with five carved birds, a raven that talks in riddles, and eight biomes that will kill you in a specific order if you visit them in the wrong one. The order is real and it is strict: each boss drops a power and a key that the next biome assumes you already have.

What to be wearing when you ring the bell

The rule that survives every patch: a fully upgraded set of the current tier beats the first unupgraded piece of the next one. Iron Scale Mail starts at 14 armour and reaches 20 at quality 4 — the same number a fresh Wolf Hide Chestpiece gives you, one whole biome later. Upgrade before you climb.

  1. Day 1–5
    Meadows

Workbench, a roof, a bed, and enough Leather Scraps for a Leather Tunic. Two deer trophies put Eikthyr on the altar. He is the tutorial and he hits like one — 500 health, no stagger, and a stamina power that trivialises the next fifty hours of running.

  2. Day 5–15
Black Forest and the bronze age

Copper and tin become Bronze, bronze becomes a forge, and the forge is what the rest of the game is built on. Burial Chambers hold the Surtling Cores your smelter and kiln need — five each, ten in total, and they are the real reason to go inside. The Elder needs three Ancient Seeds from Greydwarf nests.

  3. Day 15–40
    Swamp, Mountain, Plains

The long middle. Each of these three is a resistance check before it is a combat check: poison in the Swamp, cold on the Mountain, and in the Plains a mosquito that does 90 damage to an unarmoured chest. Bring the mead, not the extra armour — resistance is multiplicative and armour is not.

  4. Day 40+
Mistlands, Ashlands and the Deep North

The difficulty curve stops being gentle. The Mistlands introduce eitr and magic and take away your ability to see; the Ashlands take away your ability to stand still; the Deep North ends the chain with Kall Fimbulbringer, three phases and 47,000 health, at an altar that asks for no offering at all. Carapace armour at 32 base is the biggest single jump in the game, and you will still feel underdressed.

  • Current-tier armour at max quality, not the next tier unupgraded
  • Two health foods and one stamina food, freshly eaten
  • A portal home, placed before you ring the bell
  • The right resistance mead for the biome, not more armour
  • A second set of gear in a chest at home

Guide FAQ

What order should you kill the Valheim bosses in?

Eikthyr, The Elder, Bonemass, Moder, Yagluth, The Queen, Fader, then Kall Fimbulbringer in the Deep North. That is the order their biomes are gated in and the order their drops assume — each boss’s reward is the thing the next biome expects you to already own.

Can you skip a Valheim boss?

All but one, technically. Nothing stops you sailing to the Plains on day three — you will simply die there. The exception is The Elder, whose Swamp Key unlocks Sunken Crypts, and every piece of iron in the game is behind that door.

How long does a full Valheim playthrough take?

Sixty to a hundred hours for a first run that builds properly and does not rush. The bosses themselves are a small fraction of that — most of the clock goes on sailing, mining and hauling ore, which cannot be portalled and therefore sets the real pace of the game.

Do you need every boss power?

You only carry one at a time, so "need" is the wrong frame — but you unlock them permanently and swapping costs nothing but a walk to any altar. Bonemass for mining trips, Moder for long sails, Eikthyr for exploring on foot. Most players pick one on day two and forget the mechanic exists.

What is the hardest Valheim boss?

By raw numbers, Kall Fimbulbringer at 47,000 health across three phases — almost double Fader and ninety times Eikthyr. By how many runs it actually ends, Bonemass: players reach him in iron, without poison resistance mead, and find out that his damage is almost entirely poison. Nothing in the game punishes the wrong preparation that hard.
