How to beat General Lothaire
Strategy built from the boss's data: which attacks to dodge, what it is weak to and how to open it up.
General Lothaire is the first real test of blocking discipline. In his first phase most strings (Combos 1 to 3, Swing, Spin and Slash) hit for 37 and can be blocked or parried, but Bash, Leap, the ground Spikes, the Wave and his Grab cannot, so learn to dodge those five on sight. In the second phase his combos hit for 50 and several finishers turn red. He also calls in sabre and musket soldiers; a pistol shot or two clears them before they can flank you.
He takes 40% extra damage from fire and double damage to the head, so the Fire Transmutation and pistol headshots shorten the fight, while Stasis is a poor choice (he resists half of it). His posture pool is only 500: break it and a critical attack takes 400 off his 1,800 HP.
- Watch for the red attacks: Bash, Combo 6, Combo 5, Combo 4 cannot be blocked, so dodge them instead of holding block.
- Lean on Fire damage: it takes extra damage from it.
- Avoid relying on Stasis (Crystallization); it resists that damage type.
- Its head takes ×2 damage, so aimed firearm shots to the head pay off.
- Its posture pool is 500. Break it with heavy and parried hits, then land a critical attack for a fixed 400 damage (22% of its HP).
- It brings in other enemies during the fight (9 extra moves from summons); clear them quickly so they cannot flank you.
- It has a grab: grabs cannot be blocked, so keep your distance when it lunges in.
- The nearest Lantern is Field Encampment, about 71 m from the fight, where you respawn after a death.

On The Battlefield your kit is the Saber, the Pistol and the Fire Transmutation, and Lothaire is weak to the last one: he takes 40% extra fire damage and resists only 30% of Ignite build-up. Open every gap with the flame, or coat the Saber with a Flaming Whetstone (each hit fills 40% of the Ignite meter, 10 charges). Skip Stasis here: 7 segments and 50% Stasis resistance make him the hardest boss in the game to freeze.
His head takes double damage, so the Pistol is a real damage tool and not just for his summoned soldiers: 30 body shots or 15 headshots kill him at Pistol level 10. The Saber needs 90 light hits at level 1, so posture is the faster route. His phase-one strings can be blocked or parried (0.2 s window), every Saber perfect parry deals 100 posture damage, and breaking his 500 posture opens a 400-damage critical attack, almost a quarter of his 1,800 HP.
Ambers: Duellist's Focus (wider parry window), Iron Grip (Ferrofluid Flask use cannot be interrupted) and Wound that Heals all sit in chests on The Battlefield itself. Blocking his phase-one hits costs 35 Endurance each out of your 80, so parry rather than turtle.

Game dataSpoilerRead William's journal entry on General Lothaire
The commander advances with the banner of the empire clutched tightly within a grotesquely enlarged arm. Beneath the flag writhes a mass of soldier heads fused together into a single towering body, each face frozen somewhere between devotion and agony.
Despite its monstrous form, the creature marches with terrifying purpose, as though the will of the regiment still survives within it. It is less a beast than the embodiment of war itself — a banner carried forward by death alone.

Of its 18 attacks, 9 are unblockable (Bash, Combo 6, Combo 5, Combo 4); the hardest single hit is Bash for 50. It takes extra damage from Fire damage. Expect summoned enemies during the fight.
