Valheim Mountain Survival Guide: Cold, Silver and Wolves
Freezing kills you before anything with teeth does. How to beat the cold, find silver without digging blind, and survive a wolf pack on open snow.
The Mountain is the only biome where the terrain itself is on a timer. Step above the snow line without frost protection and the Freezing effect starts draining health immediately, with no enemy involved. Everything else up there — the wolves, the drakes, the golems — is a problem you meet while already losing health to the weather.
Beat the cold before you beat anything else
There are exactly three answers, and they do not stack usefully: a Frost Resistance Mead from the fermenter, a Wolf Fur Cape crafted from wolf pelts, or a Lox Cape from the Plains. The mead is the one you can have before you go, which is the point — you cannot craft a wolf cape without first surviving long enough to kill wolves. Brew four, drink one at the snow line, and treat the rest as your retreat timer.
Finding silver without digging blind
Silver veins are buried under the snow with no surface marker, which is why Bonemass drops the Wishbone. Equip it as your utility item and it pings faster the closer you are — a slow beep at range, a rapid one when you are standing on the deposit. Then dig straight down with an iron pickaxe. A single large vein can fill a cart, and like every other ore it will not go through a portal.
| Threat | Health | Biggest hit | How to beat it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wolf | 80 | 70 slash | No resistances at all — any weapon works. The danger is the number of them. |
| Fenring | 300 | 95 slash (leap) | Weak to fire. Only comes out at night — leave before dark if you can. |
| Drake | 100 | Frost spit | Shoot it down — its drops are what the Frostner and frost arrows are made of. |
| Stone Golem | 800 | 110 blunt or pierce | Immune to fire, frost and poison, resists slash and pierce — but Very Weak to pickaxe damage. |
- Silver unlocks the strongest armour before the Plains and the best cold protection
- Wolves can be tamed, and a tamed pack fights for you anywhere in the world
- Drake drops feed frost arrows, which carry straight into the Plains
- Frost protection is a consumable clock, and running out means dying to nothing
- Wolves spawn in packs and there is nowhere to break line of sight on open snow
- Silver is buried; without the Wishbone you are guessing where to dig

Guide FAQ
How do you stop freezing in the Valheim Mountain?
Three things work: a Frost Resistance Mead, a Wolf Fur Cape, or a Lox Cape. Standing Warm and Sheltered — a campfire under a roof — also cancels it entirely, which is why a small hut at each mining site is worth the wood. The mead is the only option you can have before your first trip.
Where is silver in Valheim?
Buried under the snow in the Mountain biome, with no visible surface marker. Equip the Wishbone from Bonemass and walk until the ping speeds up, then dig down with an iron pickaxe. Silver deposits are large — a single vein can fill a cart — but the ore cannot be teleported, so plan a route back that a cart or a boat can handle.
How do you fight a wolf pack?
Never in the open. A wolf has 80 health and hits for 70 slash — one at a time is trivial, four at once is fatal in any armour. Put your back to a rock face or a hut wall so only one can reach you, block, and counter on the stagger. If there is no terrain to use, run downhill: wolves follow, but they string out, and a strung-out pack is four single fights.
Can you tame wolves in Valheim?
Yes. Trap one behind walls where it cannot reach you, drop raw meat on the ground, and wait out of its line of sight — the taming bar fills while it eats and calms down. Tamed wolves breed, follow you, and fight for you in any biome, which makes a Mountain trip that starts with one pen pay for itself many times over.
Should you fight Moder before or after exploring the Mountain?
After. Moder has 7,500 health and cannot be staggered, so the fight rewards silver gear rather than testing whether you can get by without it. Mine first, craft a full silver set and a silver-tier weapon, then summon. The one thing worth doing early is finding her altar, because it doubles as a fixed landmark to navigate the snow by.
