Valheim Swamp Survival Guide: Iron, Poison and Crypts

The Swamp ends more Valheim runs than any other biome. Here is what actually kills you there, what resists your sword, and how to bring the iron home.

The Swamp is the first biome that is actively hostile rather than merely dangerous. It rains constantly, so you are permanently wet and cannot warm up. The water hides Leeches. The trees hide Draugr. And almost everything that lives there deals poison, which ignores the number you have been optimising since day one — your armour.

90Blob poison per hit
20 + 70Leech bite
200Draugr Elite health
800Abomination health

Poison is the whole biome

A Blob has 50 health and one attack: a 90-point poison cloud. A Leech has 60 health and bites for 20 pierce plus 70 poison. Neither number is reduced by armour the way physical damage is, and both apply a damage-over-time that keeps ticking while you run. Two Blobs and a Leech will kill a player in full iron who has no mead — that is the shape of almost every Swamp death.

Your sword is the wrong weapon here

EnemyHealthResistsHit it with
Blob / Oozer50 / 150Slash, pierce, fire; immune to poisonBlunt, frost or lightning — all Weak
Draugr / Draugr Elite100 / 200Fire; immune to poisonAnything physical — the Elite hits for 58 slash
Leech60Immune to fire, resists poisonAn arrow, from dry land
Wraith100Slash, pierce, blunt; immune to frost and poisonFire — it is Weak to it, and to spirit
Abomination800Very resistant to pierce; immune to frost and poisonFire — the one thing it is Weak to. Never arrows.

Sunken Crypts: how to clear one

  1. 1
    Build the outpost first

On the nearest dry ground, a workbench, a portal, a bed and a roof. Everything else in the Swamp is easier once you respawn 40 metres away instead of an ocean away.

  2. 2
Pull the doorway, don't push it

Crypt corridors are narrow and Draugr come in groups. Standing in the entrance means one enemy reaches you at a time and your back is a wall, not three Blobs.

  3. 3
    Mine the muddy scrap piles

This is the iron. Each pile takes several pickaxe swings and the ore does not go through portals, so plan the trip around the boat, not the portal.

  4. 4
Break the walls you are allowed to break

Crypts hide rooms behind cracked walls that a pickaxe opens. That is where the extra chests and the densest scrap piles sit. If a crypt felt small, you missed one.

  5. 5
    Sail the ore home

A Karve holds enough for a first run; a Longship holds a crypt's worth. Sail with Moder's power once you have it — it is the difference between an hour and fifteen minutes.

  • Four or more Poison Resistance Meads
  • A blunt weapon for Blobs, fire for Wraiths and Abominations
  • A pickaxe — for ore, and for cracked crypt walls
  • A bow with 40+ arrows for Leeches and Draugr archers
  • Materials for a portal, a bed and a workbench at the shore
  • Two health foods and one stamina food, eaten on the boat

Guide FAQ

What should you bring to the Swamp in Valheim?

Poison Resistance Mead above everything else, a blunt weapon for Blobs, a bow with at least 40 arrows, a pickaxe for the ore and the cracked walls, and enough wood and stone to put a portal, bed and workbench on the nearest dry ground. Bronze-tier armour is fine; going without mead is not.

Why can't I hurt Blobs with my sword?

Because Blobs are Resistant to slash and pierce, and a sword deals slash. They are Weak to blunt, frost and lightning instead. A mace or a club roughly doubles your damage against them, and it is the same reason a bow feels useless in the Swamp's open water.

How do you get into Sunken Crypts?

You need the Swamp Key, and the only source is The Elder in the Black Forest. There is no lockpick, no alternative entrance and no other drop — if the door will not open, the boss is still alive. Once you have the key it works on every crypt in the world, forever.

Is the Swamp harder than the Mountain?

Harder to survive, easier to prepare for. The Mountain's threats hit for more — a Fenring does 95 slash and a Stone Golem 110 — but they are visible and they come one at a time. The Swamp's damage is smaller, constant, comes from under the water, and stacks poison on top. Most players lose more gear in the Swamp than anywhere else in the game.

How much iron do you need from the Swamp?

More than one crypt's worth, and more than you think. A full iron armour set, an iron weapon, a shield, a stonecutter, a cart and the forge upgrades together run well past a hundred bars, and the Mountain wants iron picks on top of that. Plan on three or four crypt trips before you leave the biome, and build the shore outpost so each trip is shorter than the last.
